OSU’s Russian Troupe performs social commentary play March 6, 7

CORVALLIS, Ore. –Oregon State University’s Russian Troupe will perform the play “Rich Brides” on March 6 and 7 at the Lab Theater in Withycombe Hall, 30th Street and Campus Way, Corvallis.

The curtain will open at 7:30 p.m. on March 6 and at 4:30 p.m. March 7 for the play, which will be performed in Russian. A complete summary of the play in English will be provided to all audience members.

Written in 1878 by Aleksandr Ostrovsky, the play takes on themes such as: the strong dominating the weak, the negative influence of money on a society’s values, the place of women in society, and the worth of people.

Known for his commentary on Russian society of that era, Ostrovsky argues for social change in his writings. The play is set outside of Moscow in a summer home and features a young couple who are torn apart by a secret about her past relationship.
