Oregon State University celebrates International Education Week


CORVALLIS, Ore. – A culinary exploration of the Mediterranean and screenings of award-winning international films are among the events set for Oregon State University’s observance of International Education Week, Nov. 16-20.

OSU professor of anthropology Sunil Khanna will deliver the keynote address, “Global Encounters: What Is It Like to Live and Learn in the Unfamiliar,” on Monday, Nov. 16, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Memorial Union 206. Khanna is the 2009 recipient of the OSU International Service Award.

“Taste of the Mediterranean: A Journey through Culture and Cuisine” invites the community to experience regional culture through food and music. The event begins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, in the Marketplace West Dining Center. Tickets cost $8 and are available for purchase in advance at any campus dining center, or at the door. The event is sponsored by University Housing and Dining Services.

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will present a series of films from Germany, Spain, France and Algeria during International Education Week. The screenings take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in Owen Hall 101. Admission is free and open to the public.

In conjunction with the film series, Arndt Peltner of Radio Goethe in San Francisco will give a public lecture, "Twenty Years after the Fall of the Wall – Personal Stories," Wednesday, Nov. 18, from 1 to 2 p.m. in Strand Agriculture Hall 222. Peltner will also deejay a dance in the Memorial Union East International Forum (Club Escape) from 9 p.m. to midnight. The event is sponsored by the OSU Student Sustainability Initiative.

The INTO OSU Center will host an open house and international fair on Tuesday, Nov. 16, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Heckart Lodge. Throughout the week, OSU departments will host workshops on international programs and resources, including study abroad, international internships, student scholarships and career opportunities.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences in the United States.
