CORVALLIS – Darrell E. Ward, associate director for cancer communications at the Ohio State University Medical Center, will give a public lecture on Sept. 28 at Oregon State University.
Ward will speak on “St. Albert’s Mission Hospital: Three Women Doctors Caring for the Poor of Northern Zimbabwe.”
Ward visited Botswana, Swaziland and Zimbabwe in 2000 and observed Africans battling with the AIDS epidemic. He also went to southern and West Africa to provide HIV education and media workshops. Earlier this year, he visited St. Albert’s Mission Hospital. His talk at OSU will describe the doctors at this hospital and their struggle to provide medical care during a time of political turmoil and a collapsing economy in Zimbabwe.
Ward is the author of “Reporting on Cancer: A Guide for Journalists,” as well as “The AmFAR AIDS Handbook: The Complete Guide to Understanding HIV and AIDS,” published by W.W. Norton. His next book, “A Guide to HIV/AIDS in Africa: The Disease, Its Prevention, and Basic Home Care,” will be published by the Ohio State University Press next year.
The lecture is free and open to the public. It will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the Agricultural Life Sciences building, Room 4001.
The event is sponsored by the Department of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Sciences.
