09/14/2001

CORVALLIS - Marlan Carlson, chair of the Oregon State University music department, and James Douglass, former OSU director of bands, will exercise their conducting expertise in separate guest appearances in the People's Republic of China this fall.

In October, Douglass will conduct the Gansu Province Opera Theater Orchestra (in Lanzhou) in two symphony orchestra concerts. He will also hold several trumpet clinics in the nearby University School of Music.

In December, Carlson will conduct the Henan Province Opera Orchestra in Zhengzhou, in a concert of symphonic music as part of a "professor exchange" between Henan Arts Academy and OSU. He will also teach classes in orchestra and chamber music.
