Resolution reached in coaching dispute

06/16/2000

CORVALLIS - Oregon State University and former OSU men's basketball coach Eddie Payne announced today that they have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement to resolve their dispute.

The two parties had disagreed about the appropriate compensation to be paid Payne when OSU athletic officials decided to make a coaching change on March 12. As a result of the settlement, Payne will be paid $195,000.

Payne says he accepts the university's decision to change coaches, but there had been disagreements about the amount he was due on his contract. Payne subsequently filed a tort claim against the university.

The settlement announced today will completely resolve any tort and contract claims, and Payne's employment at OSU will end immediately. He will not teach for the College of Health and Human Performance, as had previously been arranged.

Under the settlement, the Risk Management Division of the Oregon Department of Administrative Services will pay $44,000, and the OSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will pay $151,000. Both parties say they are pleased the matter has been resolved.
