CORVALLIS - Oregon State University's ninth annual James Vomocil Water Quality Conference, scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 5, in LaSells Stewart Center, will focus on "Innovative Approaches to the Oregon Salmon Restoration Program."
"Salmon restoration and water quality limited stream designations have dominated the Oregon water quality conversation during 1997," said OSU bioresource engineering professor Ron Miner, organizer of the conference. "I would argue that we will be successful only to the extent we can creatively move beyond previous models in seeking water quality improvement."
Registration begins at 8 a.m., costs $30 and includes a box lunch. The public is invited to attend.
Morning sessions include:
- 9:05 a.m. - Stan Gregory, OSU fisheries and wildlife professor, will speak on "Does Riparian Vegetation Influence Stream Temperature - Evidence from Land Use Monitoring and Experimental Manipulations."
- 9:35 a.m. - OSU's George Taylor, the state climatologist; and Chad Southards from the Oregon Climate Research Center: "Long-term Climate Trends and Salmon Populations."
- 10:05 a.m. - Robert Beschta, OSU professor of fisheries and wildlife and of forest engineering: "Ecological Approaches to Riparian Restoration."
- 11 a.m. - OSU bioresource engineering professor Marshall English: "Pollution Credit Trading: Potential Tool to Improve Water Quality in Oregon."
- 11:30 a.m.- Dave Leland, manager of the Drinking Water Program, Oregon Health Division: "Cryptosporidium and Drinking Water: The Microorganism of the '90s."
- Noon - Luncheon keynote speaker Bruce Andrews, director Oregon Department of Agriculture: "Oregon's Save the Salmon Plan."
Topics to be addressed during afternoon breakout sessions include: a natural treatment of winter sewer overflows, pesticides and nitrates in Oregon's groundwater, snowmelt and flooding, and shading and stream temperatures.
