CORVALLIS - W. Lee Schroeder, vice president for finance and administration at Oregon State University since 1992, has been named interim director of OSU's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
He succeeds Dutch Baughman, who last week announced his resignation from the university.
Schroeder will serving as acting athletic director until a new director is appointed, said OSU President Paul G. Risser.
"Dr. Schroeder understands our entire athletic program and, of course, knows the university very well," Risser said. "He has superb intuition for judging and assisting people and his personal standards and integrity are impeccable."
Risser said Schroeder also will chair the search process for a new director. That search will begin within two weeks, he added.
"There is significant national interest building in this position, so the search process will need to be thorough to ensure that we select the most appropriate person to continue the momentum now being generated by OSU athletics," Risser said.
Schroeder came to Oregon State in 1967, joining the faculty in the College of Engineering. A professor of civil engineering, he held a variety of administrative posts within the college before being named the university's chief business officer five years ago.
Schroeder is a 1962 graduate of Washington State University, where he played football. He also earned his master's degree from WSU, and a Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Colorado.
