07/18/1996

CORVALLIS - Four Oregon State University students from Columbia County will receive $1,500 each, thanks to a 1927 Vernonia High School graduate.

Norman W. Pettijohn, an OSU alumnus and registered civil engineer, established the Norman W. Pettijohn Scholarship for any OSU student who graduates from Vernonia High School.

Recipients for the 1996-97 academic year are: Keith Chang, an OSU sophomore in computer science; Leslie Weller, a sophomore in pre-veterinary medicine; Wayne Eckertson, a senior in electrical engineering; and Nacole Kretschmer, a freshman in agricultural science.

Chang, a 1995 Vernonia graduate, is focused on a career in private industry. He is the son of Eric and Colleen Larsen of Vernonia.

Weller, also a 1995 Vernonia graduate, will specialize in the veterinary care of horses. She is the daughter of John and Vicki Weller of Vernonia.

Eckertson, a 1993 Vernonia graduate, plans a career in electrical engineering. He is the son of May and Val Eckertson of Vernonia.

Kretschmer is a 1996 Vernonia graduate and will start her OSU career in September.

Following graduation from Vernonia, Pettijohn entered the U.S. Navy as a civilian engineer during World War II. He started Pettijohn Engineering and Construction Co. in Portland in 1946. He sold the firm in 1983 and established the scholarship.
