Drupal themes

Developed by Central Web Services to Web Communications and University Marketing brand identity guidelines, these Drupal themes can be used by any Oregon State department, program, office or division. They were created with flexibility in mind, and you can select from a number of customization options to adapt the visual style to your site.

These templates are currently only available to Drupal 6 users. If you need to request a Drupal 6 site, contact Central Web Services to start that process. Users new to Drupal will benefit from taking introductory classes on this Content Management System (CMS). Any site currently in Drupal 6 can easily be switched over to these themes.

These themes are locked so departments using them will benefit from any automatic updates and patches to correct bugs or add new features. However, it is possible to duplicate one of these themes to create a custom install adapted specifically to your site. This is not recommended for anyone other than advanced Drupal developers with strong theme design experience. All customizations should not in any way change or undermine the integrity of the intended design. All sites based on these themes should follow the guidelines outlined below. Any duplicated or customized themes will not benefit from future automated updates.

Sample of a branded Drupal theme with key areas identified

Title (1)

The site title should not be edited in any way. Changing the font, imagery or background graphic is not allowed. As with print materials, unique logos are not allowed for any academic, administrative or research units, without exception.

Banner imagery (2)

The primary customizable element in these themes is the imagery appearing in the banner area. A single image can be used, or a rotating pool of images can be assigned to this space.

The default versions of these themes contain images that follow the brand identity guidelines. You may choose to use any or all of these images for your own sites, or you may upload your own.

Use only high-quality images. Snapshots, edited photos or photo collages are not allowed in this space. Any exceptions, such as using an illustration or other graphic in this space instead of a photo, must be approved by University Marketing.

Use the current pool of images as guiding examples should you choose to add your own photos. University Marketing, Web Communications and Media Services can help should you need photographic support or if you want advice on working with a professional photographer. High-quality, branded images are available through an online photo gallery.

Banner images should adhere to the brand guidelines for photography as well as the following:

  • Other than cropping and color/contrast correction, do not manipulate the image in any way; no stretching, fading, collages or other special effects are allowed.
  • Stock photos can be used as long as you have purchased the appropriate rights or you are following the royalty-free agreements for that specific image.
  • If you take your own photos, be sure that any people who are clearly recognizable have signed a release form that allows their image to be used.

Horizontal Navigation (3)

Horizontal navigation is optional. Some sites will not need to use this space. If you use horizontal navigation, space is limited depending on link length. There should only be a single row of horizontal navigation on any site. This space is often used for audience-based navigation (i.e., students, donors, alumni, faculty, parents), linking to key landing pages within the site.

Vertical Navigation (4)

Every site should contain its main navigation on the left-hand sidebar. Contact information should be one of the links in this sidebar. Sites can have more than one left-hand navigation menu depending on their structure.

Footer

Every Oregon State Web site must include a physical address, phone number and e-mail address or contact form in the footer. The e-mail address should directly reach the person responsible for the content of the Web site who is also available to answer any general comments about the program or department. Do not deploy a Web site without the appropriate footer information.
