Walnut (Juglans)

Various walnut species are planted in Oregon, but the two most common are the black walnut and English walnut. Neither is native to Oregon and will not be fully described on this website.

 

  • Leaves: Large, pinnately compound leaves; alternate and deciduous.
  • Fruit: A walnut-- large nut with deeply grooved hard shell, exposed after the green, fleshy outer covering decomposes and falls off.
  • Twig: Thick and stout, with a chambered pith
