CORVALLIS, Ore. – Two Oregon State University information technology professionals were honored by a regional higher education computing consortium this week for creation of a program that provides quick online training tutorials to help faculty and students answer technology-related questions.

OSU’s “Technology Across the Curriculum” (TAC) program earned the 2009 Hugi Excellence Award for Academic Technologies from the NorthWest Academic Computing Consortium. The group comprises colleges, universities, and other non-profit organizations in the Pacific Northwest and nearby areas, and the Hugi Award is its highest honor. OSU’s TAC program was honored along with other efforts from the universities of Idaho and Montana.

The award from the consortium recognizes a TAC program called the Generating Education Mastery System that provide “just-in-time” online training, allowing “TAC staff more time to engage faculty in broader questions and strategies to improve educational quality without bypassing the critical role of providing how-to instructions to meet immediate training needs.”

TAC is led by Associate Director Jon Dorbolo and Project Manager Mark Dinsmore, who accepted the award as part of the consortium’s 2009 Chief Information Officer Summit at the Salishan Resort at Oregon’s Gleneden Beach.

Hugi Award“TAC was created five years ago to provide our campus with technology support and development, and the approach to created online tutorials has proven to be a remarkably effective way to provide assistance to our users,” said John Greydanus, head of OSU Media Services, which includes TAC. “The leadership of Jon Dorbolo and Mark Dinsmore has been critical in bringing this approach to life, and we’re gratified to see their work recognized by our peers.”

The award carries with it a plaque and recognition within the information technology departments of the 34 member campus and organizations that comprise the consortium. Click here to learn more about the NWACC Hugi Awards and take a look at our award application .

box_captivate4_112x112.jpgSending Captivate Data to a Web Page using Javascript

Here is an example of sending data from Captivate via JavaScript and displaying it on the container HTML page.

Once again, attach a JS function call to a Captivate object, and add the appropriate JS function to the html page that wraps the Captivate SWF.

In the next example we will add a simple push using the javascript variable and another JS function with an additional php file to insert the Captivate data into a MySQL database.

Adobe Captivate 4 - Tips

Here is a simple way to add a pop-up browser window to a Captivate slide. There are two basic parts, the first, adding the js function to the standard.js script that is published with all Captivate projects. You have to add your js function to this file:

C:\Program Files (X86)\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4\Templates\Publish\standard.js

This js file is re-copied to the directory where you are publishing your project every time you publish it, so you must modify it here in the Templates directory, otherwise your changes wil be wiped out each time you republish.

Here is an example.

New Classroom Computers Fall 2008

This summer, Media Services replaced classroom computers with dual-platform MacPro computers that support either the PC or Mac platform. The new computers provide greater processing power and flexibility, and replace five-year-old computers that were beginning to fail.

The login process for the MacPro computers is different from last year.

We hope you find time to review the following instructions prior to your first class.

TAC Supports Qwizdom in 2008

Image of Qwizdom RemoteHave you heard about Qwizdom or seen those little red clickers around campus that look like TV remote controls? Qwizdom is an audience response tool which allows presenters to gather feedback from the audience. An increasing number of instructors at OSU use Qwizdom to enhance their lectures, track student attendance, encourage 100% audience participation, give and grade in-class quizzes, and all of the collected data can easily upload to BlackBoard or into an Excel spreadsheet.

The Details

Qwizdom created software called ActionPoint (free for the OSU community!) which loads into Microsoft Office’s PowerPoint as an extra toolbar. You can use your existing PowerPoint presentations with ActionPoint. Instructor kits are available for free (from TAC) and include a host, an instructor remote, and some student remotes. Students purchase new or used remotes from the OSU bookstore. There is no extra registration cost per course, and one clicker can be used in any course that utilizes Qwizdom.

Support

TAC offers workshops and one-on-one introductions to the Qwizdom system. Also, we have extensive documentation and GEM tutorials available. We promise to show up to your first Qwizdom-enhanced lecture to make sure the technology runs smoothly!

Active Learning with Powerpoint
twenty qestions screensho

One way to actively engage student participation is by employing the drama of competition. While students may generally groan at the announcement of a quiz, the phenomena of the quiz game show on television is ever popular as entertainment. TAC has modeled two types of quiz-games in PowerPoint for use in your class:

1. Jeopardy style: Like the popular game-show, the quiz questions are set up in categorized columns of increasing value. Selecting a value on the matrix links to a quiz slide. Like the game show, the quiz slides are given in affirmative answer form, to which students provide solutions in question form. With the TAC PowerPoint template, all you need do is enter the categories, answers, and questions, to prepare the game for class use. Suggestions for conducting the game are in the template. Note that Blackboard tests include a jeopardy-style question type so that you may combine these two tools to maximize involvement and impact.

Download an updated (11-17-2008) version  Jeopardy Game Template [version 1.2.0] Note: this is a .pps powerpoint presentation file. If you double-click it to launch it it will display as a Powerpoint show. To edit it, launch PowerPoint, and "Open" the file.

Effective Presentation Techniques

Do you ever feel anxious at the prospect of speaking in front of a group? Have you ever found your hands shaking or your mouth dry as you begin speaking? You aren't alone. Studies and surveys show that the fear of public speaking ranks right up there with the fear of heights-even with the fear of death.

It's not only beginners who experience presentation fear. Experienced presenters often find that they feel some tension in the days and weeks before an important presentation. Even people who feel confident when they walk into the presentation room sometimes discover themselves unexpectedly nervous when they stand up to speak.

Effective Presentation Techniques discusses some things that you should keep in mind when presenting using powerpoint.
