Whether it's a one time trip or a daily commute, sharing a car trip is a great way to reduce stress, save money and protect the environment.
OSU is now utilizing an electronic ridematching/carpooling resource called AlterNetRides. This secure system connects prospective drivers and riders via email and has optional features like text messaging and advanced mapping. There is no charge to the user to register or utilize the system, and it can be used for business or personal trips.
Remember to use common sense when sharing a ride with someone you don't know. Read the full disclaimer.
AlterNetRides requires you register with a valid email address, after which you will be asked to select ride parameters such as approximate pickup location and timing. You can also opt to specify driving, radio, smoking and other preferences. You can change your details at any time.
Once you set up a ride, the system matches other users' ride criteria to yours. When you search for rides the system lists possible matches. A "blind email" feature hides your full email address for increased security.
AlterNetRides runs in an applet that opens a separate browser window. This requires you to allow popups for alternetrides.com. You do not need to allow popups for any other websites.
After the applet opens, please use the menu to navigate the system.
While finding rideshares on the system is simple, AlterNetRides is a powerful tool with additional features and layers of functionality. Some of these include:
There is also an AlterNetRides Facebook group, open to any Facebook member.
Your personal safety is important! Please check the AlterNetRides Frequently Asked Questions page for tips on safety and security.
