OSU Recycling Manager celebrates 5 years – look how far we’ve come!

Fri, 05/11/2012 - 11:44am

This year, our OSU Recycling Manager Pete Lepre celebrated his 5th year at OSU. As Pete reflects on the changes he’s seen over the past 5 years, he recognizes several major accomplishments that the OSU community has made towards responsible recycling.

Pete Lepre being presented his 5-year service award by Business Services Director Brian Thorsness.

In 2007, OSU Recycling partnered with Allied Waste of Corvallis to offer the Master Recycler Class. This eight-week program covers all aspects of waste reduction. The classes are offered free to anyone who agrees to “pay forward” what they have learned about waste reduction through completing 30 hours of community service. Over the past five years, over a hundred people throughout surrounding communities have completed this program.

Each year, OSU Campus Recycling and Surplus Property work with University Housing and Dining to reduce waste during residence hall move-outs. By educating residents on repurposing and recycling and by giving them the tools to recycle and donate as much as possible, this program has been extremely successful. This year 17,558 lbs. of donations were collected – 1.5 times as last year! What’s more, this effort not only helped the environment by promoting the reuse of materials, but these donations also helped our local nonprofits and those in our community who are in need.

During Residence Hall move-ins there has been a great deal of packaging materials that were being sent to the landfill. So, in 2010, OSU Recycling launched the Styrofoam Recycling Program, which provides separate bins to recycle these materials. OSU students and staff really stepped up to make this project successful. In example, in just one 6-day period, 120 cubic yards (20 dumpster) of packaging material was collected and recycled. This effort not only kept these items out of the landfill, but it also saved taxpayer dollars – the recycling cost was only 13% of what the landfill fees would have been.

One of the most impressive examples of OSU recycling efforts involved the commitment to event recycling. Through collaboration among DaVinci Days staff, OSU recycling, Allied Waste, and community volunteers, 87% of the trash was diverted either to recycling or compost, at last year’s DaVinci Days. This meant that 67% less waste was sent to the landfill! At the University, Event Recycling took a major step forward at University Days events, where composting and other zero waste measures have been instituted and maintained – and serves as a shining example of the commitment and dedication of the OSU community to be environmentally responsible.

Being Recycling Manager is sometimes a dirty job, but Pete Lepre takes it in stride.

Information Services launches new videoconferencing website

Thu, 05/03/2012 - 10:17am

On Tuesday, following valuable input from many stakeholders, OSU Information Services launched a new Videoconferencing Services website. The goal of this site is to give customers a central hub from which they can discover and request these services — regardless of whether that service is provided by Media Services, Network Services, or a DCA.  When customers do request services, they describe their need via a questionnaire, which further helps IS consult with them on the right solution for their needs.

The questionnaire uses a webforms module to help direct communications from and to customers.  In addition to sending email to the service provider(s), the webform populates submissions into a database. This allows IS to run a simple report on aggregate data or access historical requests.

Network Services uses a number of webforms for service requests, and IS will roll out still more webforms as we build out the new IS website, which is on track to launch on June 30.

“Bag It Corvallis” Seeking Volunteers

Fri, 04/27/2012 - 11:55am

The “Bag It Corvallis” campaign needs your help. Volunteers of the Student Sustainability Initiative can help invite the public to sign postcards, with the Bag Monster at the Saturday Farmer’s Market on April 28th and May 5th between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The postcards will be delivered to the City Council, which is considering an ordinance. The campaign’s goal is support for an ordinance in Corvallis that bans single-use plastic carryout bags with an incentive toward reusable bags. Single-use plastic bags are used on average for 12 minutes each, litter our beaches and present a hazard to the environment and human health.

If you are interested in volunteering at one of the Farmer’s Markets or in some other way, please contact Debra Higbee-Sudyka at dwhigbe@juno.com.

Strengthening Sustainability Curriculum across the Disciplines regional conference April 20

Thu, 04/05/2012 - 10:59am

How can sustainability concepts be effectively integrated across the disciplines and what is the role of scientific literacy specifically in advancing sustainability education?

What various forms does place-based learning take at campuses across the region, as well as nationally and globally, and how can we design curriculum that can help drive solutions to pressing regional issues including food justice, salmon survival, regional contaminants, coal exports, and regional contributions to and impacts of climate change?

How can we better integrate attention to globalization in sustainability education and research and draw insights from the structural adjustment of the global south to anticipate and address increasing pressures to privatize water, public lands, and institutions in the Pacific Northwest?

These questions and others will be addressed at the Strengthening Sustainability Curriculum across the Disciplines and across the Pacific Northwest conference set for April 20 in Vancouver, Washington. Sign up for a stimulating day of panels and workshops addressing ways to engage with pressing issues facing our bioregion and to join with others in shaping a sustainable and equitable future.  Individuals and/or campus teams of any size may attend, including faculty, staff, students, teachers, and community members interested in sustainability and justice
initiatives.

Sneak Peek at Earth Week 2012

Wed, 04/04/2012 - 4:35pm

Over 40 years ago, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson helped drive communities across the U.S.  to organize teach-ins for the environment on April 22, 1970 – the first Earth Day. Right here on our campus, OSU students put together a series of events, participating in this landmark date. While Earth Day-related festivities have not occurred every year since, our annual Earth Week celebration has been going strong for what will be the 12th consecutive year this year!

The annual Earth Week celebration at OSU is a week of fun and educational activities geared toward raising environmental awareness and engagement. This year Earth Week is April 21-28.

The primary organizers and sponsors of Earth Week this year are Campus Recycling and the Student Sustainability Initiative. However, any local organization is invited to participate, which is one thing that makes OSU’s Earth Week so unique. The Earth Week website allows any OSU or community group to submit an environmentally-related event to the central calendar as well as register for the Community Fair. Participating groups for 2012 include OSU student groups and departments, local businesses and nonprofits, and government agencies. See the list of participating organizations here.

Mark your calendar for April 24 at 11 am to 3 pm in the Memorial Union Quad for the annual Earth Week Community Fair, where over 50 groups will table this year. Other events include the annual Earth Day Hoo Haa! at the Organic Growers Club farm, an electric vehicle tour of campus sustainability features, a container gardening workshop at the Student Sustainability Center, several environmentally-themed films, and much, much more. Check out the full calendar here.

Three ways to celebrate Arbor Day 2012

Wed, 04/04/2012 - 11:38am

From increased property values, to clean air and water, to better test scores from kids, trees provide city dwellers with a long list of social, economic, and environmental benefits.  For Oregonians, one day just isn’t enough to express our appreciation for all the great services trees provide. So we celebrate a whole Arbor Week!

This year, Oregon’s Arbor Week falls on April 2nd-8th (it’s always the first full week of April). Here are some ideas around Corvallis on how to celebrate:

Happy Arbor Week!

1)   Honor a heritage tree—The famous Trysting Tree located on the OSU campus will be recognized as an official heritage tree on the afternoon of Friday, April 6th. Attend the celebration and learn the unique history of this very special tree.  The event is free and open to the public.

2)   Explore a forest—go for a walk or run in McDonald-Dunn Forest. Breathe in the fresh air and listen for wildlfe. Trail maps and interpretive materials available at Peavy Arboretum.

3)   Take a tree tour—Use the free OSU Campus Tree Tour iPhone app to discover the amazing collection of trees growing on the OSU campus.  Customize your own tour and learn to identify different species.

New LEDs for the Valley Library

Wed, 03/28/2012 - 3:06am
LEDs in the Valley Library.

The OSU Sustainability Office will be funding and replacing halogen track lights in the Valley Library with LEDs. LEDs are much more efficient than halogens and last much longer. The replacement the building’s track lights alone will save over $3,000 a year in energy savings.

The Valley Library, previously lit with halogens.

The old halogen lights are also not suitable for lighting artwork, because if halogens are pointed directly at a painting then they can fade the colors over time.  LEDs, on the other hand, do not produce any ultraviolet or infrared light which is why they are starting to be used by museums in their art galleries. Currently even the Mona Lisa is lighted by LEDs!

Harvesting Clean Energy Conference Comes to Corvallis

Thu, 03/22/2012 - 3:34pm

The Harvesting Clean Energy (HCE) conference is the Northwest’s premiere event bringing together the agriculture and energy industries to advance opportunities for rural communities to produce clean energy, boost struggling rural economies, and help the region and nation meet the energy challenges of the coming decade.

Now in its 12th year, Harvesting Clean Energy consistently draws over 500 participants from a diverse range of fields – from motivated farmers, ranchers and other rural landowners to professionals from agriculture organizations, rural utilities, tribes, economic development agencies, and research institutions, to lenders, energy developers and consultants, and representatives of federal, state and local governments.

The conference rotates between Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana each year.  Drawing on dozens of top-notch speakers with direct experience in successful projects, Harvesting Clean Energy focuses on practical steps to design projects that will pencil out, address key barriers, access technical support and secure financing amidst tough finance markets.  The energy opportunities addressed include wind power, biomass energy and biofuels, solar and geothermal resources, microhydro, energy innovation in the food processing sector, and efficiency technologies to reduce energy costs and enhance profitability.

Conference planners have had several meetings with the Sustainability Office and OSU Conference Services to figure out how to accommodate this large and important regional conference.  Conference Services has done a great job to accommodate the capacity and price range for the conference (thanks Tina and Emily!).

Look for more information in the coming months, and save January 27-29, 2013 for the Harvesting Clean Energy conference in Corvallis!
