Information for Students
What is the Office of Student Conduct?
- The Student Conduct & Community Standards office is part of the Office of the Dean of Student Life (though we are housed in a different building). We handle conduct violations and investigate possible violations. When you agree to be an OSU student by accepting admittance, you agree to follow Student Conduct Regulations. If you are involved in a situation that may have violated these regulations then we will work with you to resolve it.
Additionally, if you are involved in a situation in which a violation has been committed against you by another student, the Conduct Office can assist you.
What are the commonly violated student conduct regulations?
- The most commonly reported and reviewed violations at OSU are the possession or consumption of alcohol beverages by persons under 21 years of age and the illegal use or possession of drugs or illegal substances. OSU has a zero tolerance policy for these violations. What that means is that if law enforcement becomes involved, a citation will be issued. Academic Dishonesty is another commonly reported conduct violation, as is theft.
Can I appeal a violation charge? Absolutely! Here are the appeal procedures.
What if I don't know what the regulations are?- It is explicit in the Student Conduct Regulations that it is every student's responsibility to follow the regulations. It is implied that students will review the regulations which are available on the web. If you become involved with the conduct review process you will quickly learn that we follow due process and seek to inform you of your rights as well as your responsibilities.
I don't think my violation is that bad.
- Personal development and growth through accountability is also an essential part of the college experience. The conduct review process is designed to help you think about, evaluate, and become accountable for personal behavior and, if need be, redirect your behavior in order to meet University expectations.
While I'm here, is there anything else? - Yes. Students don't come to OSU intending to violate conduct regulations. We know that students have a lot to manage so here's some links to resources for academic and personal success:
