Responding to Distressed and Disruptive Student Behavior
A 4-Part Presentation
Clip 1: Lisa Hoogesteger, Director of Healthy Campus Initiatives, introduces the presentation. In this clip, Lisa outlines the function of addressing disruptive and distressed behavior on campus. Additionally, Lisa identifies current student characteristics and campus community efforts, through the role of the Community Care Team and the Student Care Team, to establish a community of care. Clip 2: Dan Schwab, Director of Student Conduct and Community Standards, discusses disruptive behavior and identifies what this might look like in the classroom. Dan presents strategies for preventing and responding to disruptive behavior, including how to address a student and how and why a faculty or staff member would report disruption to the Student Conduct and Community Standards office. Clip 3: Jackie Alvarez, Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, builds upon Dan's presentation by discussing distressed student behavior. She identifies the signs and behaviors to look for in students in minor to severe distress. She also discusses different options faculty and staff should consider when encountering distressed behavior along with ways to help the student. Additionally, Jackie addresses questions regarding policies and precedures of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) related to reporting.[29:02]
Clip 4: Jack Rogers, Director of Public Safety, discusses the role and function of the Office of Public Safety on campus within a community of care. He addresses ways in which faculty and staff can connect with Public Safety and what one may expect when contacting the office with either a question or to report an incident. Jack also discusses how and why faculty should develop an emergency safety plan for their classrooms. Finally, he reviews campus resources available to faculty, staff and students.[18:54]
