BEST Bridge Program
BEST Summer Bridge Program
2016 BEST* Summer Bridge Program for Incoming OSU First-Year Student Athletes
The BEST Summer Bridge Program is an immersion program designed to help new student athletes adapt to the college environment by learning to balance academics and sports. Think of it as an effective jump-start for your collegiate career. The program includes daytime, evening and weekend activities. Full participation in all aspects of the program is required. Some of the significant components of the program are:
Six Credits toward Graduation: The students take two courses: the Bacc Core Course (e.g., Sociology, Music, or Speech Communication) strengthens critical thinking, expression and communication skills. The ALS seminar targets academic success strategies, socio/cultural awareness, and successful transition. In both courses, students have support from residence hall assistants, learning assistants and tutors, and professors.
Residential Experience: As part of the enriched learning experience, you live with the other BEST students in one wing of a selected residence hall, Tebeau Hall.
Group Activities: Because the BEST program focuses on holistic development, we offer unique Saturday and Sunday learning experiences. Please note that participation in these weekend activities is required of all BEST students.
University Orientation: Your BEST experience includes OSU’s first-year student orientation, advising, and fall class registration program (known as START). We take care of your registration. Visit http://oregonstate.edu/newstudents/start/home to learn more.
Athletic Orientation, Workouts, and Training Table: Following clearance from the Sports Med staff, you will be issued your OSU workout gear, be given a thorough orientation to the Sports Performance Center, and begin your workout regime with your teammates for the duration of BEST. Also, you will be eating at the Athletic Department “Performance Table” with other student athletes where you will begin to learn about the nutritional requirements of a college athlete.
Assessments: We offer a variety of assessments so we can design a program of support appropriate for each student. Assessments include academic evaluations of math, writing, and reading as well as an inventory of learning styles. The Sports Medical staff conducts all NCAA required exams and procedures.
Cost to Attend BEST: If you are on an athletic scholarship of 25% or more, the cost of the BEST Program is covered by the OSU Athletic Department. If you are not on an athletic scholarship, the estimated cost is $4,500. This estimate does not include your travel costs or accommodations for your family.
Enrolling in BEST: The only way to become part of BEST is through the recommendation of your head coach. Be sure to speak with your coach about your interest in the program.
