This person is all about students. She finds their hidden talents, unlocks their potential, nurtures their growing confidence, teaches them life skills, and empowers them. Judy Hickam does all this as the Manager of Pangea Café.
Judy was described to me as the “Mother Ship” because Pangea is responsible for the preparation and delivery of culinary delights to various Memorial Union Retail Food Service restaurants across campus. She is also described as incredible, patient, thoughtful, creative, and compassionate.
Judy’s supporters admire her for her devotion to the students who work for her. She provides not just a job, but true learning opportunities and a special mentoring relationship with each of the 40- 50 students who call Pangea their second home. One of her students had this to say; “Thank you so much for all you’ve done for me. It meant so much to me that you took the time to talk and listen to me and offer possible solutions.”
Judy goes out of her way to embrace diversity and promote a learning environment for her staff where each student is valued. She hires students from all walks of life and embraces them all. Her students are empowered to take on leadership roles as they learn to manage particular areas of the restaurant. With her guidance students experience all facets of managing a restaurant from determining the special of the day, what ingredients to order, costing, serving size, prepping, and serving to cashiering and making hiring decisions. Last summer, several of Judy’s staff led the Kid Spirit food and nutrition class. They taught the children to prepare foods and mealtime etiquette. Judy actively works at having her unit and student staff become caring, compassionate, respectful, contributing and growing members of the OSU community
In addition to her employees, Judy gives the Nutrition and Food Management class practical real life experience when they “take over” Pangea Café for a week every spring term. The class is made up of OSU students, many of whom have never worked in a restaurant before. Judy works tirelessly to help them create and test menus, determine and order needed supplies, and learn proper food handling techniques, preparation, plating and serving.
Judy is involved with on-going department development, partnering with the SDA National Nutrition Month, the Organic Growers Club, and promoting healthy eating by offering Meatless Mondays.
Taking personal credit isn’t Judy’s style but we, the members of the Division of Student Affairs are proud to salute Judy for her dedication and outstanding service to her department, to the division, and to the entire OSU community.
