James Mellein - Student Affairs Service Award 2004-05
Statement of Wonderfulness
In Celebration of
James has greatly expanded our OSU safety program to include campus wide training, training and certification opportunities for our students, and on the spot safety audits for our staff to help test their abilities to respond in emergencies. He has also worked with Sport Clubs to provide safety staff at their events, and while the budget for providing this service has stayed fairly consistent, the need has outgrown the budget. Still, James finds the resources to get the job done.
James goes above and beyond every day in many ways. He is often the first one in the office and the last one to leave, working long hours to make sure his safety staff is well taken care of and highly trained to meet the needs of their jobs. In addition to that, he spends time just getting to know them, talking with them and mentoring them, helping them achieve their life goals.
Other colleagues say that “James possesses a zest and enthusiasm for students and preparing them to reach their full potential. His compassion and ability to intently listen to others sets him apart to a unique person that knows how to support co-workers and celebrates with them their victories both small and large.”
Sometimes described as a force of nature, his presence is a healing one for the department and he strives to find common ground under sometimes less than ideal circumstances. He has clarity about his position and purpose within the department and he understands the benefit that he and his staff provide to the department, Student Affairs unit and university. He embodies the spirit of student development and learning commitments we have here at OSU to enhance student lives. He contributes long hours and his tireless pursuit of excellence is an example to us all. James is a man that "walks the talk." His contributions outside OSU include, American Red Cross, Special Olympics, and NIRSA. James brings his own special creativity to any opportunity to generate mischief, humor, enthusiasm or personal growth.
James exemplifies the principles of the Campus Compact in many ways. He is deeply caring, always checking in with us when we are doing well to see if there is anything he can do. He is celebrative and loves hearing about and praising the accomplishments of others. He is disciplined in his work, “crossing his Ts and dotting his Is” to make sure Rec. Sports complies with or surpasses the safety standards we are expected to meet.
James’s sense of humor, depth of caring, kind heart and compassionate spirit have helped all of us at one time or another. He can always be counted on for a smile, a laugh, a kind word or a thoughtful deed. For me, James is the little brother I never had, filling a spot in my life that helps me feel connected to family here.
