What does it take to be an effective ally?
Each person who has interest in or chooses to work for social justice brings unique talents, skills and motives. Though it is often assumed that being a good ally is a matter of choosing to care about social justice, in fact most people find that there are new behaviors, attitudes and strategies that must be learned over time. In this session we will review some common strategies for being an effective ally, look at challenges related to learning new habits, and take a broad and inclusive view of how we can go about adapting to everyday life as a result of new and changing knowledge. OSU Student Advocate Christian Matheis will serve as the day's presenter and facilitator. All levels of learners are encouraged to attend. Lunches are welcome. Sponsored by the OSU Campus Coalition Builders, Division of Student Affairs http://oregonstate.edu/studentaffairs/ccb/index.html

Paying the Price of Racism
It is not uncommon for majority people to experience confusion and feelings of guilt as we learn and understand more about racism. However, we rarely, if ever, gather as a group to identify, consider or discuss the personal and collective cost of racism to those who think of ourselves as White, Caucasian or European American. The OSU Campus Coalition Builders invite you to join this campus community forum in an exploration of and respectful conversation about the cost of racism to White/Caucasian/ European American people. Although we hold the support of other groups in the highest regard, this session is specifically designed for White/Caucasian/European Americans who are interested in open, direct and to the point discussion of the subject with others of like racial identity. Sponsored by the Office of Community & Diversity and the Campus Coalition Builders. Special accommodation requests may be made by contacting jodi.nelson@oregonstate.edu or 541-737-0715 by May 14.

Welcoming Diversity
Diversity is much more than race and ethnicity, it is the mosaic of who we are. Throughout our lives we have received messages about gender, sexual orientation, economic and social status, birthplace, etc. These messages have and continue to influence who we are and who we will become, and sometimes cause us to treat others with less than complete respect. If you are someone who wants to make a difference and is ready for a stimulating day of challenge and active learning, plan to attend this NCBI day-long workshop. Facilitators will lead participants through a number of exercises aimed at identifying and reducing prejudice, gaining a more in-depth understanding of ourselves, and of oppression and how it works. In addition to an increased level of awareness, participants will be introduced to specific skills that can empower them to become more effective leaders and allies for others. This is a repeat of the February 10 workshop and will be the last this academic year. There is no charge, and everyone is welcome, but you must pre-register! Workshop goals include: identifying misinformation we have learned about others; identifying and expressing pride in groups we belong to; learning how other groups experience mistreatment; learning the personal impact of incidents of discrimination; learning how to interrupt prejudicial remarks. Pre-registration required. Registration and accommodations for persons with disabilities may should contact 737-0715 or email jodi.nelson@oregonstate.edu
