Perspectives 2002: Commitments - Disciplined

Achievements:

There seemed to be a lack of responses regarding the achievements in the division's commitment to being disciplined. However, some acknowledged the consistent references to the document years after its implementation as a testament to upholding of the expectations of the document.

Struggles:

Being disciplined was regarded as a significant struggle in the implementation of the Campus Compact. Many felt that there have been problems with consistency of upholding the standards of the document throughout the division. Some felt that there needs to be more of a structure to the means of evaluating the implementation of the Compact and measurement of what has been achieved in the initiative process in order to overcome the challenges of inconsistency.

"One of the struggles that I have seen clearly in our organization that really has impacted me and concerned me quite a bit is staff conflict. There seems to be a number of pockets of staff conflict that seem to occur on campus and within this organization that I wasn't expecting. When you see the type and level of conflict that occurs and you see these principles of the Campus Compact, they are going in opposite directions, how can we have these principles and have these kind of conflicts. I think part of the reason for that is that it's one thing to have this as our philosophy and it's another thing to try and nurture that philosophy and reinforce that at all levels within the organization and I don't think that happens. As a result there seems to be some dysfunction and I've been real effected by that. Some of that has to do with scale, this is much larger organization than I came from, therefore there is more of a full range of people caring and not caring."

"There are some spots within the university and the community where we do not follow the Compact. It's a nice document, but some people just put it away and don't attend any meetings because their bosses may not allow it, even though it is specified in the Compact as something to further personal and professional growth. We are under terrific workloads, but we get a lot more done if we feel good. There are some folks that just don't manage that way; it's just not their style. They are more top down, giving assignments and boundaries so that they don't have anything more to deal with. This limits people's opportunities to grow and stifles the folks that they are supervising. For a division as large as we are, we have so few people that attend any kind of development activities."

"To some extent we may have let up on the discipline because of the budget crises. Some people have not kept up on meetings and not revisited the Compact."

"We probably haven't been as disciplined as we should have been in some ways. I feel that we haven't been committed to gelling as an organization in the way that we should. It could get into areas about caring whether care about the organization or just keeping our heads above water."
