One of the commitments of the Campus Compact that could be measured was joyful affirmation of the division's achievements. Many individuals felt that their departments had taken significant time to acknowledge their achievements and encourage one another through celebration. Many interviewees also felt that their coworkers valued their contributions and effectively expressed it.
"We've talked a lot about how we have to be sensitive to the fact that we've had a lot of hard things happen, but we also need to celebrate the good things that have happened as well."
"I had an experience that I had shared with only one of my coworkers, because to me it sometimes feels like I'm bragging so I don't go into a staff meeting and say 'Oh, this wonderful thing happened to me.' Well, we talked about it at our staff retreat everybody wanted to hear about it. So, it makes us feel like we should celebrate, let's not feel like we are trying to brag about accomplishments, let's take that time to care about each other and celebrate that success."
"We are supportive and joyfully affirm each other. I think it's important that we know how to laugh here and encourage each other on a regular basis."
"Our department [Student Health Services] is intentionally celebrative based on diversity. People come together around food and fun to enhance cultural awareness. We have discussions concerning cultural competency and to give people a better sense of well-being, we have more culturally sensitive and celebrative art."
"Here in this office [UHDS Central Reception Area] we are very good about caring for each other and being very celebrative. I think our customers see that we try to have fun when it's appropriate and yet there is still professionalism."
"I think of the celebrative principle when I think about graduation in the departments. That is an event that brings all of the stakeholders together... That is a celebration that the university shares jointly. That is probably the most important one to me... celebrating the success in someone's life and knowing how many people played a part of that life."
"We kind of fell short in celebrative situations. We haven't brought in as much fun a we should have."
