Student Organization Alignment Group (SOAG)
In 2011, Oregon Senate Bill 242 (SB 242) was signed into law granting greater autonomy to the Oregon University System (OUS) – Oregon’s 7 public universities. SB 242 has allowed the separation of OUS away from the State of Oregon’s Department of Administrative Services (DAS) and the state self-insurance fund. OUS is currently in the process of identifying and obtaining required insurance policies to cover the exposures present in the seven university’s missions with an effective date of July, 1 2012. As Oregon State University (OSU) and OUS moves away from the state Self-Insurance Fund and purchases private insurance policies, it is imperative that we disclose all student organizations, which we treat as part of the University’s own functions. In addition, the knowledge of all active student groups on campus and proper categorization of these groups allow proactive risk control methods: from personalized risk assessments, proper insurance obtainment, waivers, and education of evaluating risks and their subsequent management.
The Student Organization Alignment Group, consisting of OSU Risk Management, Legal Counsel, the Student Events & Activities Center, the Center for Fraternity & Sorority Life and Recreational Sports, is leading in the effort to:
- Conduct an accurate inventory of active student organizations at Oregon State University;
- Gain insight into the successes and challenges that student organizations have experienced since implementation of the student organization relationship model in Fall of 2010 (Student Organization Recognition Policy & Procedures Manual available at http://oregonstate.edu/fa/manuals/sor/001);
- Explore opportunities to identify ongoing relationships and additional resources for supporting student organizations active in our community;
To facilitate this exchange of information, we are hosting multiple information gathering and sharing sessions in various campus locations prior to July 1st. It is our hope that any person in relationship with student organizations, including student leaders and advisors, will join us at one of these sessions. You can find scheduled times and locations below. If a student group you are involved with is not currently recognized (listing of University recognized student organizations available at http://oregonstate.edu/sli/studentorgs/find_organization), please be sure to come to one of the scheduled sessions. If you cannot attend, please contact the Student Events & Activities Center to discuss the process of getting the organization recognized for the upcoming academic year.
If you have questions or concerns, please contact Danté Holloway in the Student Events and Activities Center at dante.holloway@oregonstate.edu or x7-1462.
