Internet Access Information

For you to take advantage of the OSU network and the Internet access at the LaSells Stewart Center (LSC), you need to provide your own hardware and software, and OSU will provide a 10BaseT Ethernet connection (10Mb, unshielded twisted pair) to an RJ-45 jack in the wall.

You are responsible for your own PC or Macintosh with an ethernet adapter card installed (10BaseT capable) with application software drivers and all other software applications. Applications you may bring and use on the network are TCP/IP based applications such as Web browsers like Netscape and Microsoft Explorer, telnet, and FTP.

To ensure success at University Day, you should check that your applications have been installed on your local hard disk and tested before you arrive. Before attaching to the network jack at the LSC, make sure your machine is configured for BootP or DHCP.

In order to provide you with an IP address, you must list your ethernet (hardware) address below and return the reservation form no later than September 7. If requesting internet access, University Day reservations will not be confirmed until the hardware address is received on this form in the Faculty Senate Office. You will then be assigned an appropriate IP address for your network connection in the LaSells Stewart Center.

What, you may ask, is the ethernet address?
  • Ethernet Address
  • Mac Address
  • Node Address
  • Hardware Address
  • Ethernet Adapter Address
The above terms are used interchangeably and all refer to the same physical address of your network adapter card for a given piece of electronic equipment that is capable of utilizing a network connection. This address is also written in several forms. For example, the hardware address 00-00-c7-50-4c-d8 can be written in several forms:
  • 00-00-c7-50-4c-d8
  • 0000c7504cd8
  • 0000c7 507cd8
  • 00 00 c7 50 4c d8
  • 00:00c7:50:4c:d8
  • 0.0.c7.50.4c.d8
Notice that the address is 12 characters long and may be grouped in different ways. The last example uses suppressed 0's when grouped in pairs and separated by the decimal point. The 12 legal characters are 0 through 9, a, b, c, d, e, and f.

Where can the address be found? If you are running a PC with Windows 95 or 98:
  • Turn your system on
  • Select the Start Bar
  • Select Run
  • Type "winipcfg"' and OK
  • This dialog box will display the ethernet address along with other information.
For other configurations, please contact your Departmental Computer Administrator. If you do not have a DCA, contact the Faculty Senate Office at 737-4344.
