To: Ken Williamson, Faculty Senate President
From: Bob Burton, Curriculum Council Chair
Report of the Curriculum Council for 1998 – 1999.
The Curriculum Council has three main charges:
The Curriculum Council reviewed 585 Category II proposals during the 1998 calendar year. Summaries of the status of Category I proposals for the past and previous academic year are attached (courtesy of Gary Beach). We report on a few highlights.
One of the strengths of our university is the faculty’s continuing renewal of curriculum. The Council facilitated and approved major curricular reforms in the departments of Apparel, Interiors, Housing, and Merchandising, in Computer Science, in Human Development and Family Science, and in Fisheries and Wildlife.
The Curriculum Council has worked closely with OSU Statewide. The Council’s chair serves on the OSU Statewide Council. The Council has worked with various departments to offer degrees at a distance while maintaining quality and access. These efforts have led to proposals to offer the existing undergraduate degrees in Environmental Science and in Natural Resources, in Agriculture, and in Liberal Studies at new locations. The Council’s Chair presented these proposals to the Faculty Senate. The Senate gave its unanimous approval.
This year the undergraduate program review of the Department of Political Science was completed and presented to Provost Roy Arnold. The site visit for the review of Botany and Plant Pathology was conducted this year and the final report is under preparation.
Various changes in curricular policy were approved and implemented by the Curriculum Council. Much effort has gone into streamlining the review process. At the same time, especially in light of the new funding model for OUS and the university, we have worked hard to avoid duplication and jurisdictional problems. There is continuing emphasis placed on including liaison from affected departments in curricular proposals.
