OSU Faculty Teaching Excellence Award

The emphasis is intended to be on actual classroom teaching. The award is for full-time faculty of Associate Professor, Assistant Professor or Instructor rank who devote a significant amount of time to teaching and who have less than 10 years of service to OSU. This includes tenured, tenure-track,and fixed term faculty. The recipient receives a plaque and $2,500.

Award Criteria

Selection criteria include:

• exceptional effort to ensure the quality of the students' classroom experience
• high standards for the rigor and currency of course content and the level of student performance
• innovative teaching
• direct and significant impact upon and involvement with students
• original and scholarly publications in nationally recognized and refereed journals or other professional outlets
• evidence that the candidate's scholarly contributions have enhanced the effectiveness in the classroom

Nomination Process

Nominations shall include: (1) the completed nomination form; (2) the nominee's vita; (3) position description indicating breakdown of FTE allocation; (4) evidence of teaching effectiveness, including a clear summary of teaching evaluations; and (5) three letters of support: one shall be from a current or former student; one shall be from a current or emeritus faculty member; and the third may be from a student, faculty member, alumni or other individual who can comment on the nominee's qualifications. Because the nominator completes the nomination form, the nominator is not eligible to submit a letter of support. The letters of support each shall not exceed three single-sided pages using at least 12 font and 1" margins. Please be certain that the nomination materials, particularly the three letters, address the criteria. Signatures on the letters and supporting documents must be included.

The original copy of the nomination form must be submitted to the Faculty Senate Office upon submission of the electronic copy; paper clip the original only – do not staple nor place it in a folder or binder. The nomination packet for the successful recipient becomes the property of University Archives and will not be returned to the nominator.

Selection Process

Nominations will be reviewed and selected by the Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee and a member of the Advancement of Teaching Committee. Committee recommendations will be made on the basis of the information submitted; the committee does not solicit additional information. Nominees for this award may also be considered for nomination for the CASE U.S. Professor of the Year Award, which is presented by the Carnegie Foundation.
