OSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award

The OSU Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award recognizes a faculty member for superior academic performance, professional renown, and service to the University and to the public. The recipient receives a plaque and $1,000 from the OSU Alumni Association. Nominees for this award may also be considered for nomination for the CASE U.S. Professor of the Year Award, which is presented by the Carnegie Foundation.

Award Criteria

Selection criteria include:

  • exceptional scholarly achievements and publications
  • teaching ability, reputation, and quality
  • participation in University affairs
  • visibility and recognition in Oregon, the U.S., and the world
Recipient Expectations

On behalf of the OSU Alumni Association (OSUAA), the recipient will be expected to speak or be otherwise recognized at upcoming alumni event(s) within the fiscal year he/she receives the award. OSUAA will work with recipient and their schedule to coordinate travel and other logistics for honoree to present in his/her area of expertise to regional alumni audience.

Nomination Process

Nominations shall include: (1) the completed nomination form; (2) the nominees vita; (3) position description indicating breakdown of FTE allocation; and (4) three letters of support. At least one letter of support must be written by a current or emeritus faculty member and at least one letter of support by a current or former student. The remaining letters of support may be from colleagues, students, and/or others who can comment on the nominee's qualifications. Because the nominator completes the nomination form, the nominator is not eligible to submit a letter of support. The letters of support each shall not exceed three single-sided pages using at least 12 font and 1" margins. Please be certain that the nomination materials, particularly the letters of support, address the criteria.

The original copy of the nomination form must be submitted to the Faculty Senate Office upon submission of the electronic copy; paper clip the original only – do not staple nor place it in a folder or binder. The nomination packet for the successful recipient becomes the property of University Archives and will not be returned to the nominator.

Selection Process

Nominations will be reviewed and selected by the Faculty Recognition and Awards Committee and a representative selected by the OSU Alumni Association. Committee recommendations will be made on the basis of the information submitted; the committee does not solicit additional information. Unsuccessful nominations made in the previous academic year will be reconsidered. Nominators may wish to submit additional information to update and supplement these previous nominations.
