Turning on Windows XP Firewall

An Internet firewall is a piece of software or hardware that helps screen out hackers, viruses and worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet. Installing a firewall is the most effective and important first step you can take to help protect your computer. It is important to have a firewall and antivirus software turned on before you connect to the Internet.

If you're using Windows XP, you should have Service Pack 2 installed. It has a built-in firewall that offers significant protection for your computer.

To check to see if it's running:

  1. Click the Start button » select Control Panel
  2. Double click Security Center
  3. Select Windows Firewall
  4. Make sure On (recommended) is selected
  5. Select the Exceptions tab and see what Programs and Services are being allowed though the firewall. Uncheck any you do not recognize. We suggest unchecking File and Printer Sharing.

If you do not have Service Pack 2:

  1. Click the Start button » select Control Panel
  2. From Control Panel, click Network & Internet Connections » Network Connections
  3. Double click on the Local Area Connection icon
  4. Click Properties » select the Advanced tab
  5. Check the box that says Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing...
  6. Click the Settings button
  7. On the Services tab, make sure all of the boxes are UNCHECKED » click OK
  8. Click OK again to save your choices
