Energy Savings Settings


By using the following settings, a computer will use less energy. The ideal solution is to turn off your monitor if you are going to be gone for more than 15 minutes, and turn off your computer if you are going to be gone for more than two hours. Switching off the surge protector will prevent the computer from drawing any plug-load.

Windows Vista

  1. Click the Start circle at the bottom left of your screen and open the control panel.
  2. Double click the Power Options icon.
  3. If it is present, click the Change settings that are currently unavailable link.
  4. Lastly, ensure that the Power Saver plan is selected.

Windows XP

  1. Right click on the desktop and choose Properties.
  2. Click on the Screen Saver tab, and then click the Power button.
  3. Change the Turn off monitor: setting to After 15 min.
  4. Change the Turn off hard disks: to After 1 hour.
  5. Change System standby: to After 2 hours for desktops and After 15 min for laptops.
  6. Change System hibernates: to Never for desktops and After 1 hour for laptops.
  7. Click OK.

Mac OS X

  1. Click on the apple symbol (Apple Menu) in the upper left of your screen.
  2. Go to System Preferences, Click Show All and select Energy Saver from the Hardware row.
  3. Click on the Show Details button. Select Power Adapter under Settings For:
  4. Set Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for: to 2 hours for desktops and 15 min for laptops using the slider.
  5. Check the box for Use separate time to put the display to sleep and set the time to 15 minutes using the slider.
  6. Check the box for Put the hard disk to sleep when possible.

Mac OS 9

  1. Click on the apple symbol (Apple Menu) in the upper left of your screen.
  2. Go to Control Panels and select Energy Saver.
  3. Click on the Sleep Setup tab.
  4. Set Put the system to sleep whenever its is inactive to 2 hours for desktops and 15 min for laptops using the slider.
  5. Check the box for Separate timing for display sleep and set the time to 15 minutes using the slider.
  6. Check the box for Separate timing for hard disk sleep and set the time to 15 minutes using the slider.
