Disabling your Wireless Adapter

If you connect to the wired jack in your room, disable your wireless connection. If you are connected through a wireless connection, unplug your wired connection.

Network loops can occur when your computer uses both its wired and wireless connections simultaneously. If a network switch detects one of these loops, it will turn off the connection of the computer causing the loop. To prevent this from happening, disable one connection when using the other and remove any network bridges Windows installs.

Disabling Wireless Connections

  1. Click on the Start button, and open the Control Panel.
(The Control Panel may be under Settings on the Start Menu.)
  2. Click on the Network and Internet Connections category.
(If the Control Panel is not in Category mode, instead open Network Connections and skip to step 4.)
  3. At the next screen, under "or Pick a Control Panel icon" open Network Connections
    Network Connections
  4. In the Network Connections window, under "LAN or High-Speed Internet," right-click on "Wireless Network Connection"
  5. In the menu that opens up, select the option "Disable."
    Disable Wireless Network Connection

Once the connection is disabled, the "Wireless Network Connection" icon should turn gray and in the status text under its name, it should say "Disabled." When you want to use the wireless connection again, right-click on the icon and select "Enable."
