The Copyright Processes

for Works Created at Oregon State University

OSU supports faculty, staff and students in all issues related to protection of intellectual property, to comply with laws, and to protect the University, faculty, and the copyright owner. Some resources and information are offered through the OSU Copyright Center, others through the Office of Technology Transfer.

For information about ownership, distribution, and income-generation, link to OSU Copyright Principles in Action.

Software

Many computer software programs may be distributed electronically so that anyone may use them for non-commercial purposes, without fee, with a simple on-line license that includes mandatory legal disclaimer statements. This type of license may not be used if there are any fees required or to grant the recipients commercial rights. If you wish to use this method of distribution, link to the standard Software On-Line Permission Statement and follow the procedures for using this license.

Use of External Works on Blackboard

When Blackboard involves using the work owned by others, permissions must be obtained. Copyrighted content hosted on Blackboard must go through the copyright clearance process for each term used. This includes text or PDF articles, or any multimedia. (This mirrors the permissions process to use print and packet materials, which is overseen by the Copyright Center.)
Failure to properly clear posted material can result in fines for departments and for the University.
To start the clearance process or for more information about Blackboard, please contact:

The OSU Copyright Center

The Center offers guidance to individuals, departments and other campus organizations to understand the applications of copyright law in higher education. To comply with legal and OUS mandates, it offers copyright clearance services for course packets and web publishing.
