Budgets 101

This is a step-by-step primer on how to prepare a proposal budget. Each of the major line items in a typical budget will be discussed in detail; important topics such as cost-sharing and allowability of costs will also be addressed. The workshop will feature pointers on how to get a proposal approved by the Office of Sponsored Programs and Research Compliance quickly and efficiently.

Cost Sharing

This workshop will cover cost share basics. This session will include: what is cost share, what is the difference between mandatory and voluntary cost share, what types of cost share are there, how to report cost share, determining who is responsible for cost share (during the proposal stage, award, and post award period), and who is primarily responsible for cost share during the life of the award.

eRA Systems

This workshop will provide an overview of an agency as well as their eRA system. Examples of agencies to be covered are NSF (FastLane), NIH (NIH Commons), NASA (NSPIRES) and NOAA (NOAA Grants On-Line).

Grants.gov

This workshop will introduce using Grants.Gov for proposal submission. Grants.gov allows organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from all Federal grant-making agencies. Grants.gov is the single access point for over 900 grant programs offered by Federal grant-making agencies.

Grants.gov for NIH

This workshop will introduce faculty and staff to NIH applications utilizing the Grants.gov electronic proposal submission system.  Topics that will be covered are: the reasons behind the change, the timeline of NIH, the forms that are now being used, and NIH Commons errors that hold up an application being successfully submitted to NIH.   The workshop will allow participants to see the forms “live”.

Locating Funding through On-Line Databases

This workshop presents an overview of funding opportunity database such as grants.gov, IRIS, Fed Biz Ops and how to utilize it to identify sponsors for your research. This session will include: database content, searching techniques, and the establishment of e-mail alerts.

NIH Commons

This session will demonstrate the NIH Commons to prepare Just in Time (JIT) and eSNAP reports for electronic submission. Other features of the NIH Commons will be highlighted.

NSF FastLane

This introductory session offers hands-on experience for creating a proposal in FastLane, the National Science Foundation’s electronic proposal submission system. Attendees will utilize their own FastLane account to learn how to perform functions including preparing a budget, uploading a project narrative, and applying for a no-cost extension.

Proposal Writing for the Non-Sciences

This two-hour workshop is created especially for faculty in the non-scientific disciplines who are new to writing their first proposal for external funding. The workshop shares proposal writing techniques and project salesmanship. This workshop is restricted to faculty and postdocs and has a limit on number of participants.
