Oral History Review Policy

The IRB review process is designed to ensure that the rights and welfare of participants from whom information is obtained have been appropriately protected. The OSU IRB has determined in its institutional role as the interpreter of federal regulations that oral history projects may fall under the purview of the IRB. The IRB's requirement for a prospective review of proposed projects by the IRB will assure that appropriate safeguards are in place.

Specifically, oral history projects will require IRB review and approval if they are conducted with either the intent:

  • to archive the interview information for future uses, or
  • to publish the information in a public forum, or
  • to present the information in a public forum.
