Oregon State is one of only two land, sea, space and sun grant institutions in the U.S.,  holds a top tier research designation from the Carnegie Foundation, and is the state's largest public research university. Oregon State research totaled almost $263 million in Fiscal Year 2013, and private sector financing reached nearly $36 million, a 65 percent increase in the past five years.

The OSU Research Agenda, integrated with the university's Strategic Plan, guides faculty inquiry in OSU's three Signature Areas of Distinction: Advancing the Science of Sustainable Earth Ecosystems; Improving Human Health and Wellness; and Promoting Economic Growth and Social Progress.  Faculty engage graduate and undergraduate students in research to both advance this agenda and help develop the R&D talent needed by academic, government, non profit and private industry organizations.

The OSU Advantage connects business with faculty expertise, student talent and world-class facilities to research solutions, bring ideas to market and launch companies.

Challenging a Nobel Laureate

Sep 30, 2014

Justin Biel’s work could force molecular biologists to rethink basics of protein structure. Linus Pauling won the 1954 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his description of the chemical bond that holds protein molecules together. Sixty years later, an undergraduate researcher at Oregon State University, where Pauling did his own undergrad work, prompted scientists to take […] Read full story.

The Seabird Connection

Sep 29, 2014

NEWPORT, Oregon – Most of us glimpse saltwater fishes only as grilled fillets on a dinner plate or as HD images on a TV screen. Even the fishermen who catch our salmon steaks and cod cakes rarely see a live fish that isn’t thrashing on a line or flopping in a net. So how […] Read full story.

Seeking the Headwaters of Peace

Sep 29, 2014

BLUE NILE, Ethiopia – Can a massive dam on Ethiopia’s Blue Nile River become a “platform for peace” in the parched lands of Africa? Or will it instead spark new conflicts among neighboring nations? And what happens to the people whose homes will be submerged when the reservoir fills? These are the kinds of questions […] Read full story.

OSU Advantage Update: As you may be aware, President Ray appointed me as the Interim Vice President for Research following the departure of Rick Spinrad, who accepted a position as Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Washington, D.C.  In my new role, I would like to share an important organizational update. I will continue to lead the implementation of the university’s strategy to expand industry partnering and commercialization of research discoveries. Brian Wall, the director of OSU’s Office for Commercialization and Corporate Development, will have expanded responsibilities as director of the Oregon State University Advantage program, managing its day-to-day operations. I will continue to provide executive leadership for the OSU Advantage, a university initiative that began in 2013 to help commercialize innovations, launch new companies, connect existing business with faculty expertise and student talent, and provide Oregon with work-ready graduates needed for economic progress. In his expanded role, Brian will report to me. Additionally, both Brian and I will continue our involvement with the South Willamette Valley Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network, or RAIN, which was made possible by legislative funding of $3.75 million last year. OSU and the University of Oregon, along with the cities of Eugene, Springfield, Albany and Corvallis, are collaborating on this broad initiative that leverages the research and educational expertise of academia and moves it toward private economic growth. I represent OSU on the RAIN board of directors, and Brian serves on the RAIN executive working group. The OSU Advantage Accelerator is a key component of RAIN.  Please join me in congratulating Brian on his leadership role with the OSU Advantage and offering your support as he directs this important work on behalf of the university. -- Ron Adams, Interim VP for Research
