Rococo Romance - Design by Nancy Owens Bryant

Rococo Romance, a "wearable art" design pictured above, by Nancy Owens Bryant, professor in the Department of Apparel, Interiors, Housing and Merchandising. This gown was Best of Show for faculty entries to International Textile and Apparel Associations design competition.

Bryant says, "I was inspired by the style of French painters Francois Boucher and Fragonard, especially how they handled flowers in their paintings. I created the ribbon flower embellishments reminiscent of a Rococo flower garden; Rococo refers to the late 18th century art/interiors/architecture movement".

Bryant has been elected a fellow of the Costume Society of America, the highest honor for professionals in her field . . . read more about it

Birds of a Feather: Ornithologists at OSU

In campus trees, air, and grounds, many birds are at home.

Yet did you know that the campus also is home to a veritable flock of bird people?

"I don't know many other universities that have as many ornithologists," says Susan Haig, professor of Wildlife Ecology, as well as a Wildlife Ecologist of the U.S. Geological Survey Forest Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center.

"For our field, OSU is a powerhouse," Haig says.

Indirect Costs: A Primer

Indirect costs are paid by agencies that enter into grants or contracts with the University for research work. They are also called overhead charges; the Federal Government refers to them as Facilities and Administrative Costs.

In May, 2003, Interim Provost Randhawa constituted a group to review the University's practices and policies regarding indirect cost recovery. Sherm Bloomer, Dean of the College of Science, prepared a description of what indirect costs are, how we have dealt with them in the past, and what our constraints are in dealing with them in the future.

Interview in the Elevator: Karen Steele, Business Affairs

Update: What would you like to tell the research community?

Karen Steele, Associate Director of Business Affairs: I think that faculty view the post-award office as being restrictive, a stumbling block to their research projects. Actually, we like to be here to assist them.

Update: In what way?

KS: We try to be very aware of agency policies and guidelines, and many times - if we're contacted - we can help faculty with unusual expenditure situations.

Update: What if they want to pay for something that is outside of their original award proposal?

KS: It may be possible. The PI needs to check with their own department's accounting personnel first, and if they have a solution, the appropriate staff person in Research Accounting should be contacted.

Update: Anything else faculty need to know?

KS: The more we know about a project, the better we're able to help. If they want to do something out of the ordinary, additional information will be needed if the proposal doesn't provide enough detail. We have some unique projects here at OSU, such as the recent Wave Tank expansion. For these, early involvement with the post-award office, which is Research Accounting, is important.

Update: You've been involved with the OSU research enterprise for almost 20 years. Have you seen changes?

KS: Oh, yes. I've really enjoyed watching the progress. I've observed that we've gone more and more into biomedical research, the health areas, and also into the microproducts area in engineering. I'm fascinated with the diversity of our research projects— it's a massive range. As we speak, we have 2,736 active projects!

Editor's note: The Office of Research Accounting and the Research Office are both on the third floor of Kerr Administration Building.
