Office of the Registrar

Wait Listing

Electronic wait listing began summer 2007. Departments may set up automated wait listing for students. With the exception of Summer term, wait listing will be available only in Phase 2 of the priority registration schedule and will continue through Sunday midnight at the beginning of the second week of classes. Students may wait list up to 3 courses.

Not all classes will have wait listing. Departments will choose which sections will have a wait list. The online schedule and course look up will display wait list details for each section including the wait list maximum and the remaining wait list seats. Wait listing must be added to the designated sections before registration begins, and must remain on the section until removed by the Registrar’s Office at the end of the registration period.

All registration restrictions apply to wait list registration. For example, if a major restriction prevents a student from registering for a course, it also will prevent the student from getting on the wait list. Wait listing incorporates prerequisite checking.

Faculty can view the wait list for their section through Student Online Services or by looking at their section information in the Web Schedule of Classes.

How Does It Work?

The wait list process checks each section for an available seat. If a seat exists the first student on the wait list will be registered in the section and will be notified via ONID e-mail that they are now registered in the course; if they no longer wish to be enrolled, they must drop it. Students are responsible for dropping courses by the appropriate deadline.

Linked courses also are accommodated. A student will only be able to register for the combined linked sections. If part of the link is wait listed, the student will be wait listed for the combination. The process will prevent over-enrolling the course. Departments can override a wait list by giving a student a capacity permit (CAP) override.
