Purpose

Students are responsible for managing their registration and knowing and complying with the Academic Regulations and published deadlines in the Academic Calendar. OSU understands that hardships and barriers can sometimes get in the way of education. The Petition for Late Change of Registration enables students to request an exception to an academic regulation or deadline when qualifying unusual circumstances beyond their control have occurred.

The Academic Requirements Committee (ARC) reviews and determines the decision of petitions.

Actions Available for Petition
  • Late course add, drop or withdrawal
  • Late change of grading basis or credit hours
  • Maximum credit overload (25+ credits for the term)
Fee

A $20 non-refundable processing fee will be charged to your student account per each request.

How to Petition

Step 1  Access the online Petition for Late Change of Registration form
(Former students who no longer have access to their ONID accounts will need to contact the Office of the Registrar directly to request the petition form.)

Step 2  Select the Type of Petition Request
(Submit one petition per request; If you request to add a class with a linked lab or recitation, you must also submit a late add petition for these sections.)

Step 3  Select Term and Course Information

Step 4  Provide a brief statement in the text boxes, preferably as a single paragraph.

Step 5  Review the Guidance on types of Supporting Documentation and then attach your supporting documentation

(PDF format only. If you need to attach multiple documents, combine them into a single PDF before attaching them.)

Step 6 Submit the form. This starts the signature routing process.

Petition Decision

Check your OSU email regularly as this is where you will be notified of the Academic Requirements Committee decision within 1-2 business days following the Wednesday meeting.

Appeal Option

It’s important to know that you can appeal the committee’s decision. An appeal is more likely to be successful if you can address the reason(s) that the committee gave for their decision and provide more information that would support your appeal.

Petition Deadline

Complete petitions, including all required signatures and/or input from instructors and advisors, submitted to the Office of the Registrar by noon on Thursday will be reviewed by the Academic Requirements Committee at their next meeting, which is each Wednesday of the term.

The completed petition with all signatures will route to the Office of the Registrar for an initial review and be prepared for the ARC to review.

Reasons for Petitioning

Circumstances that DO qualify are those which are beyond a student’s control, such as medical illness, death of a family member, or other unforeseen emergencies.
