About the Graduate Program

The most common majors in recent years have been the College of Student Services Administration, Exercise and Sport Science, Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) and Business Administration.

About Assistantships

This position is primarily responsibile for the coordination, administration, and supervision of a portion of the Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs Porgrams with oversight for 10-20 sport clubs and intramural activities. The Graduate Assistant will be responsible for the training, evaluation, and supervision of Sport Supervisors and associated Intramural Officials as well as providing leadership and advising to multiple sport clubs.

Graduate Assistants are part of our professional work team, providing leadership for programs and services. Graduate Assistants work approximately nineteen hours a week, and in return receive a full tuition waiver, usually for two academic years, plus a yearly stipend of approximately $16,200. Graduate Assistants also receive professional development opportunities on campus and registration fees from some regional and national conferences.

About Recreational Sports

The Department of Recreational Sports is the heart of OSU and provides a dynamic environment to work and learn. RecSports employs 33 full-time staff, two graduate assistants, and over 350 students that each play a key role in contributing to healthy living and student development.

Dixon Recreation Center was renovated in 2004 with input from students to create an outstanding collegiate recreational facility. Student Legacy Park was completed in 2011 after students passed an initiative to construct the outdoor facility. McAlexander Fieldhouse renovation was completed in 2011. There were over 900,000 entries by participants into RecSports facilities last year.

Minimum Requirements for all DRS Student Employees

  1. Undergraduate Students - Must be taking at least 6 credits from OSU or another university or college. Graduate Students – Must be taking at least 3 credits from OSU; If a Graduate Assistant, it must be less than .49 FTE. Temporary Staff – Contract based; half time only; must not be enrolled in classes and not have other campus employment.
  2. The hiring of each successful applicant is contigent upon satisfactorily passing a criminal background check (excluding Aquatics and IM Officials).
  3. Certified in First Aid, Professional Rescuer CPR with AED and Blood Borne Pathogens Application Process The following documents must be submitted in a professional form and appearance to be considered for employment:

Administrative Support

Administrative Office Assistant (Contact: Dani Warren, Dani.Warren@oregonstate.edu, 541-737-4307)

This position assists the General Administrative Program Assistant in the administration of student employment processes, office supplies inventory, budget reporting, material archiving and other projects and tasks as assigned. Additionally the Office Assistant assists department administrative personnel as needed with special projects.

Student Sustainability Coordinator

The Student Sustainability Coordinator serves to assist the Department on Recreational Sports in advancing our commitment to sustainability in collegiate recreation. The Student Sustainability Coordinator will advocate for sustainable programs, initiatives and projects within the Department of Recreational Sports. The position will assist with creating, developing and implementing sustainability projects, educating the OSU community about environmental, social, and economic sustainability initiatives, and assessing the impact and outcomes the DRS commitment to sustainability.

Technology Student Assistant

The Technology Student Assistant reports to the Info Technology (IT) Consultant.  The technology assistant is responsible for assisting the IT Consultant in meeting the technology needs of the department.  The technology assistant will help maintain an inventory of the department, updating computers, and taking leads on various projects.


Adventure Leadership Institute

Challenge Course Staff (Contact: Mark Belson Mark.Belson@oregonstate.edu)

While working with a variety of groups at the OSU challenge course you'll see participants stepping out of their comfort zones and celebrating their individual group successes. By following the facilitator track you will be running low course elements or operating the high course zip line, all the while gaining valuable skills in group facilitation and leadership. Come explore the challenge course and its unique and life-changing potential.

Requirements: ALI Level One Facilitator Certificate and Climbing Wall Instructor Certificate.

ALI Climbing Staff (Contact: Ty Atwater Ty.Atwater@oregonstate.edu)

Work in the Indoor Climbing Center in Dixon Recreation Center and McAlexander Field House. If you enjoy teaching others about climbing and helping students explore the vertical world, this might be the job for you!

Requirements: Climbing Wall Instructor Certification.

Bike Mechanic and Ski Technician (Contact: Sheila Evans Sheila.Evans@oregonstate.edu)

As a member of our Outdoor Center staff, the Bike Mechanic and Ski Technician is responsible for operating the bike/ski shop, tool/supply maintenance and inventory, providing repair/maintenance support to participant, and instruction.

Preferred Experience: Previous customer service, cash handling and bike or ski maintenance experience. ALI Level I Certification.

Field Staff (Contact: Josh Norris Josh.Norris@oregonstate.edu)

Work with instructors in the field to ensure the success of outings. Provide support by driving vans, helping students negotiate terrain, assisting instructors and acting as a role model for other students within ALI.

Requirements: ALI Level One Trip Leader Certificate and ALI Level Two Trip Leader Certificate preferred.

ALI Desk Staff (Contact: Sara Dalotto Sara.Dalotto@oregonstate.edu)

Work with others who are passionate about many aspects of outdoor recreation and ALI. The ORC serves as the hub of ALI activity, from a full-service bike shop to raft and canoe rentals for the white water enthusiast. Enjoy working with students to provide the essential support for our outdoor endeavors.

Requirements: ALI Level One Certificate.

ALI Desk Manager (Contact: Sara Dalotto Sara.Dalotto@oregonstate.edu)

Responsibilities: The ORC Manager is responsible for the overall supervision of the adventure recreation facilities, participants, programs, and staff for the Department of Recreational Sports.

Preferred Experience: Previous supervisory or leadership experience, outdoor pursuits experience and experience with outdoor equipment care and service. ALI Level II Certification.

Club Activity Coordinator (Contact: Sheila Evans Sheila.Evans@oregonstate.edu)

Help organize and regulate the activities of the adventure club. Coordinators work in different activity areas so there are many possible adventures of focus.

Requirements: ALI Level Two Certificate.

Teaching Assistant (Contact: Josh Norris Josh.Norris@oregonstate.edu)

Work with instructors to deliver ALI courses. Help by teaching skills, presenting materials, assisting on outing and other support duties.

Requirements: ALI Level Two Certificate, Previously passed the course in which you are assisting and completed corresponding course discipline track.

 


Aquatics

Lifeguard

Responsibilities: The Lifeguard is responsible for the daily assurance of a safe environment for the participants, programs, and staff.

Preferred Experience: Previous lifeguard experience a plus but not necessary. Lifeguard Training Certification required.

The following are opportunities for growth and leadership and are traditionally hired internally. 

Aquatics Supervisor

Responsibilities: The Aquatic Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of the lead guards, assists with the operations associated with the filtration and chemical control systems, and the general maintenance of the aquatic facility.

Preferred Experience: Previous lifeguard and supervisory experience. Previous pool operations experience, including technical/mechanical knowledge. Demonstrated risk management experience and knowledge of hazardous chemical usage and safety.

Lead Guard

Responsibilities: The Lead Guard is responsible for supporting the supervision of lifeguards, to ensure a safe environment and efficient aquatic program for all users and has facility opening and closing responsibilities during early morning, late night, and weekend hours.

Preferred Experience: Previous lifeguard and supervisory experience. Previous pool operations experience, including technical/mechanical knowledge. Demonstrated risk management experience and knowledge of hazardous chemical usage and safety.


Facility Maintenance

Facility Maintenance Student Employee

Position duties and responsibilities: Perform building and equipment preventative maintenance tasks. Assist in the repair of building systems and equipment. (filters, pumps, motors, control systems, lighting systems, etc.). Replace light bulbs throughout Rec sports facilities. Prep walls and painting. Ability to work in inclement weather. Ability to work on lifts, ladders and scaffolding up to 40 feet high.


Facility Operations

Operations Staff

Responsibilities: Operations Staff is responsible for the entry system, operating the service counters, issuing equipment and handling laundry service at RecSports facilities. This position also serves as the primary source of information for walk-in and phone participants.

Preferred Experience: Previous customer service experience and previous cash handling experience.

Center Manager

Responsibilities: The Recreation Center Manager is responsible for the overall supervision of the facilities, participants, programs, and staff for the Department of Recreational Sports. Recreation Center Managers work as paraprofessional staff, assuming managerial responsibility for the Department of Recreational Sports facilities and programs during non-business (8am-5pm Monday through Friday) hours.

Preferred Experience: Previous supervisory and/or leadership experience and previous employment with the RecSports as an Operations Supervisor.

Operations Supervisor

Responsibilities: The Operations Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision of the facilities, participants, programs, and staff for the Department of Recreational Sports. Operations Supervisors have managerial responsibility for the Department of Recreational Sports facilities and programs during business hours when administrative staff are on duty.

Preferred Experience: Previous supervisory or leadership experience and previous employment with the RecSports in the area of Operations.


Fitness Equipment Maintenance

Equipment Maintenance Employee

Responsibilities: staff is responsible for assisting with the maintenance and repairs of all exercise equipment, the preventative maintenance program, and assisting with the repair of the pool mechanical systems.


Fitness Staff

 Personal Trainer

Definition and Purpose: Fitness staff reports to the Fitness Coordinator. Responsibilities include assisting participants with fitness equipment; cleaning equipment and assisting with preventive maitenance; responding to maintenance concerns for fitness equipment; working 1-on-1 with members to design healthy, balanced exercise programs; and monitoring the activity area for safety. This is a demanding, high-volume position with an emphasis on risk management, customer service, participant safety and positive relations.

Education: Must be a current system student. EXSS majors are preferred.

Preferred Experience: PT certification from Personal Trainer Prep class or certification agency (ACSM, ACE, NSCA) and able to pass full audition.

Group Fitness Instructor

Definition and Purpose: Fitness staff reports to the Fitness Coordinator. Responsibilities include planning and instruction of Group Exercise classes/programs. This is a demanding, high-volume position with an emphasis on riske management, customer service, participant safety and positive relations.

Education: Must be a current system student. EXSS majors are preferred.

Preferred Experience: National Group Fitness certification (ACSM, AFFA, ACE Schwinn, Zumba, Body Pump,etc)) and able to pass full audition.

Outreach

Outreach Team

The Outreach Team is primarily responsible for:

All team members have the opportunity to perform a wide variety of tasks within RecSports, across the OSU campus, and in the Corvallis Community.  Each team member specializes in one aspect of message delivery, and provides leadership in that area. Specialty areas include: supervision and displays; wellness programming; new media; membership, sponsorship and advertising; and event promotion and graphic design.
 
Graphic Designer

Designers at RecSports are responsible for a wide variety of materials (ads, brochures, t-shirts, posters, videos, web etc.) related to RecSports facilities, programs, services, and events. It's a fun, and supportive environment with many projects and some tight deadlines. Good communication skills, both written and verbal, and excellent time management skills are important for success.  Workload is 10-20 hours a week.
 
Graphic design positions are typically filled through a separate process that targets students in the graphic design program at OSU and is a collective process with several departments looking to hire designers. Please e-mail Wendy Little, wendy.little@oregonstate.edu, for more information.


RecServices

RecServices Staff

Responsibilities: RecServices Staff serve as a resource of all services, programs, operating procedures and facility rental policies.  Staff responds to questions and inquiries via email, face to face and via phone.  Staff have the opportunity to develop conflict management skills, written and verbal communication skills, time management and team applied procedures.

 


Safety

Safety Programs Instructor

Responsibilities: The Safety Programs Instructor is responsible for providing services in which the campus community and the Department of Recreational Sports staff can learn basic safety and emergency response care.

Sports Clubs/Special Events Staff

Responsibilities: The Sports Safety Staff is responsible for supporting the Sport Club Program by providing emergency response and care for all OSU hosted Sport Club and Special Events.

Safety Programs Support Supervisor

Responsibilities: The Safety Programs Supervisor is responsible for the overall program and coordinator support of the Safety Programs at the Department of Recreational Sports.

Preferred Experience: Instructor level certifications in First Aid/CPR/AED Program, CPR-AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Training, and Blood Borne Pathogens preferred.

Program Manager
 
The Program Manager is responsible for supporting the coordination, administration, and supervision of the Sports & Special Programs department. The Program Manager assists in the oversight, supervision, training, and evaluation of 16-18 Sport Supervisors, 6-8 sport clubs, assigned intramural activities, and office administration. Program Manager will have a vast knowledge of the program policies, procedures, and information about sport clubs or intramural sports. This is a leadership position that works in close relationship with DRS administrative staff, peers, and participants to help deliver the program positively and efficiently. The Program Manager has a high level of responsibility to ensure that programmed activities are operated according to department and area risk management standards, policies, guidelines and expectations.
 
Sport Supervisor
 
The Sport Supervisor is responsible for overseeing a variety of intramural sports leagues and events and providing program administrative and customer service for program office. Supervisors are accountable for providing clear direction to participants, officials, and teams and being informative about standard operating policies and procedures.  They are also responsible for providing a safe and inclusive environment for all participants while on duty. Supervisors will also serve as an information source for participants on program information, area policies and procedures and complete administrative tasks within both area systems and processes. Sport Supervisors are also responsible for supporting department special events including, but not limited to, Rec Night, START, and After Dark.
