All courses combine lecture and video with hands-on skill training and incorporate real-life rescue scenarios and lessons that reinforce decision-making skills. All classes are taught by certified American Heart Association instructors or American Red Cross instructors under the current American Heart Association or American Red Cross guidelines. We strive to provide a welcoming class environment for all students, no matter what their current skill level or physical capacity.
This class is designed for any individual who has a duty to respond to emergencies. This class includes giving rescue breaths, relieving choking, practicing group and solo CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). This course meets Level C CPR requirements. It is the pre-requisite for most nursing and EMT programs.
(Note: BLS or equivalent required for all Recreational Sports employees).
Participants learn first aid skills to treat a variety of injuries such as burns, wounds, head, neck and back injuries, and heat/cold related emergencies. Participants also learn to manage sudden illnesses, stroke, seizure and poisonings. This course does not include information on rescue breathing and cardiac emergencies.
(Note: Heartsaver First Aid or equivalent required for all Recreational Sports employees).
This class teaches easy-to-learn emergency procedures that prepare lay responders to act in emergency situations that recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies in adults. Topics include proper CPR technique, rescue breathing, responding to conscious and unconscious choking and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
Designed for the lay responder, this course combines Heartsaver First Aid and Heartsaver CPR/AED into one course for those who want to get certified in both sections in one sitting.
This high-level Red Cross course teaches coaches, athletes, sports clubs, and recreation professionals how to prevent, prepare for, and respond to sports related injuries and emergencies – from children to adults. Includes advanced first aid material.
Challenge yourself and gain skills and knowledge to keep aquatic patrons safe. This program includes aquatic-specific rescues, and First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
*Participants must swim 500 yards continuously, and retrieve a 10 pound brick from 10 feet underwater. Offered as a programmed or contract class only (no private lessons). (Note: Lifeguard w/First Aid or equivalent required for Dixon employees working in aquatics).
All courses offered above can be taken as a recertification if you were originally certified within three years from the recertification class date. A ‘recert’ class is shorter and moves at a quicker pace than a normal class since all participants have prior knowledge of the material.
Dixon offers three different course formats. Fees include course materials and instruction. A schedule of classes as well as a price sheet can be found to the left.
Program classes are group classes that have a ratio of up to 9 students per instructor and are taught at Dixon. See the schedule of group safety classes.
If you cannot attend a programmed class, sign up to work independently with an instructor to get your certification. These classes are held in the Safety Resource Area inside Dixon Recreation Center and are offered every weekday. Classes hold between 1-3 students.
If you would like your group or department trained, we can come to your location at a time and day that works best for you, as well as offer training right here in our classrooms. Safety Programs also provides assistance in Emergency Response Plan Formulation, First Aid Kit development, and First Aid Response Teams for special events. We work with groups of as few as five participants. Ask us about designing a special contract to suit your needs. Contact us if interested: safety.programs@oregonstate.edu.
