Studies have demonstrated that stability and motor control are altered in the presence of low back pain. Muscular responses within the trunk are rather volatile. Given these individual variations in muscle recruitment strategies, this study set out to determine whether such adaptations in muscle activation ultimately enhanced spinal stabilization; and whether individuals would adopt similar ‘signature’ patterns for tasks with different mechanical demands.
EMG recordings were obtained from various anterior and posterior trunk muscles amongst 17 healthy participants whilst performing trunk flexion and extension both in the presence and absence of experimentally induced pain. Both dependent variables increased during pain, however, no two individuals demonstrated identical muscle recruitment but utilized a similar strategy regardless of movement direction.
These results confirm that acute back pain enhances spinal stability (protection); however, the specific means by which individuals achieve this outcome is highly variable. Hodges et al.; Eur J Pain (2013).

Many have asked me what it is like to be a strength coach intern at API during the combine period. This is what Juan Martinez, their current OSU intern emailed me. Do you have what it takes?
-Awake at 4:30am, at the facility by 5:30am complete intern duties (laundry/fill water coolers/arrange racks)
set up for first combine movement group 9am (sleds/time gate system/music system/mini bands) plus pre workout shooters repeat for 10am movement group
-Coach lifting session 10:30,11:30
prepare post workout shakes for both groups
monitor post workout cold plunge 11:30am
participate in "miadidas" testing (running/jumping/drills) noon
-Set up for second movement session at 1:30/2:30
-Coach second lift
-Prepare shakes
-Monitor cold plunge
-Clean up any equipment used 4pm
-Work on project for nick until 6pm
-Train 6:30-8pm
-Recover, go home make dinner/lunch 9pm
-In bed by 10:30pm
Repeat
- Juan

Traditionally, stretching has been recommended as a means for reducing the risk of hamstring strains and as a treatment modality in rehabilitation programmes following hamstring injuries. Nevertheless, more recent evidence indicates towards possible disadvantagious effects of stretching; it may decrease hamstring concentric and eccentric strength and may thereby adversely affect H:Q ratios.
These findings support the hypothesis that static stretching affects the H:Q ratios and potentially increases the risk of hamstrings strains. Costa et al.; Scand J Med Sci Sports 23 (2013) 38-45.

I love my job, but some days are more special than others. Consider this: female division I swimmer with 4 years of right shoulder pain and dysfunction. Three weeks after I see her she competes in her last PAC 12 event and this what she emailed me afterwards: "Guido, my last PAC 12 events were very successful last week, I got personal records in all of my individual events."
