Recently there is much talk going on in blogs, books and literature about breathing. I prefer to consider breathing as a necessary function of motor control that helps us to maintain balance and posture; to move our body and limbs, and to brace ourselves before or during contact through a feedforward and feedbackward loop; breathing is also a function to communicate through speech and gesture. Although movements are often classified according to function such as reaching and grasping, locomotion, breathing and speech - many of these functions are subserved by overlapping groups of muscles. In addition, these same groups of muscles can be controlled voluntarily, rhythmically, or reflexively. In our case, muscles used for respiration can be used to take a deep breath before diving under water, blocking inspiration when exerting force, regular cycle of inspiration and expiration, to respond to reflexively clearing the throat, producing a cough and to slow our body down when we exert ourselves at high altitude. Breathing thereby is merely an action following a need and it follows the laws of motor control. Keep it simple folks...
