Footsteps Q & A

What is Footsteps?

Footsteps is a program that compliments the Academic Learning Services U-Engage class. The Department of Recreational Sports provides an outdoor trip as part of the U-Engage class experience.

What’s the difference between U-Engage and Footsteps?

U-Engage is a new-student orientation course (2 credit) offered through Academic Learning Services. Students may take the course with an outing (ALS 199, choose lectures 040 or 060) or by itself (ALS 199, choose any other lecture listed). Footsteps is the trip portion of the class.

Why should I register for U-Engage?

The U-Engage class is a great way to find out more about the services and programs available to students on OSU’s campus. Instead of talking about what OSU has to offer, you actually explore campus!

Why go on a Footsteps trip?

The Footsteps trip gives you the opportunity to meet fellow classmates as well as your faculty and peer instructors for the class. You’ll meet other students, learn more about your upcoming college experience and enjoy some of Oregon’s outdoor recreation activities. It’s the perfect way to jump start your life as a student at OSU!

When does Footsteps happen?

Footsteps occurs during the week before Fall Term classes begin and is part of the CONNECT Week activities for new students. Trips range from 2 day outings to 3 day trips. The dates for this year’s Footsteps Program are September 19-24.

What kinds of activities are offered and how much do they cost?

3-Day Rockclimbing - $2000
Day Hike & Whitewater Rafting - $175
Surfing & Whale Watching - $200
Whale Watching & Marine Hatfield Tour - $85
Challenge Course & Local Day Hike - $100

What experience do I need?

No experience is necessary! We encourage all new students to participate. There are a variety of trips to choose from.

But rockclimbing and surfing sound technical!

The Outdoor Recreation Center provides instructors who teach a basic, introductory curriculum for these activities. Safety equipment for the activity is provided. Instructors are upper-class students, faculty and community members who regularly teach for the Outdoor Program. Some programs such as surfing are taught by professional guides. U-Engage instructors (faculty & peer) also attend the trip.

What do I need to bring?

You’ll receive a comprehensive list of equipment once you register for Footsteps. You’ll need to provide basic clothing, footwear and other essentials, but most items are those you already have at home!

What about camping equipment?

The Footsteps Program will provide group camping equipment. You will need to provide your sleeping bag, pad, water bottle and backpack (or duffel). The Outdoor Center will also provide the technical equipment necessary for rockclimbing, rafting and surfing.

What if I don’t have these items?

The OSU Outdoor Recreation Center will have backpacks, sleeping bags, pads and water bottles at a small fee that can be charged to your student account. An equipment request card is included in your confirmation packet, or request items when you arrive!

Are meals provided?

Yes! Meals are provided once you leave campus with your class.

How do I register for Footsteps?

It’s easy! Look for ALS 199 in your schedule of classes. Simply choose lecture 040 or 060 with the recitation that matches the outing you want. Talk to your advisor during START for more information.

When/how do I pay?

Fees will be assessed to your OSU account along with your tuition and student fees.
