CLIMBING

Bolt Clinic (Anchors Away!)

Stop clipping just any old piece of manky metal! This workshop is about learning types of bolts and hangers commonly used in rock climbing and how to evaluate them.

Climbing Gym Instructor Course

Trains and assesses instruction and coaching of technical skills, movement, and training on artificial climbing structures. Focuses on indoor top rope climbing and bouldering. Association of Canadian Mountain Guides Climbing Gym Instructor Manual included. Prerequisites: Current skills check certification.

The Efficient Rock Climber’s Toolbox

This course takes a look at efficiency and various belay methods, knots, rope management systems and the building blocks of self rescue. This course is a prerequisite for Self Rescue and other higher-level courses. Prerequisites: Current Skills Check certification.

 

Introduction to Aid Climbing

It’s time to bring back some of the roots of climbing! This course looks at the big wall arts with a focus on efficiency and style. No prerequisite. Two gym sessions and a climbing day trip.

Introduction to Sport Leading

This is an intensive workshop to help climbers make the transition from gym to rock. Skills covered include quick draw placement and clipping, threading of anchors, lead belaying, rappelling and more. Fee includes: instruction, transportation and equipment. Prerequisite: Ability to comfortably climb 5.8 on top rope. Four gym sessions and a ay trip.

Lead Rock Climbing in the Gym

This class teaches lead belaying and climbing on the climbing center routes. Certification is good for one year. We provide all necessary equipment. Prerequisites: Ability to comfortably climb 5.8 on top rope. Two gym sessions.

Mom’s Weekend Climbing Class

Join this drop-in session in which you and your mom can climb together and learn some basics of moving on the wall. Nothing says “quality time” like climbing! No experience is necessary as this class is geared toward beginners.

Rock Climbing I

An excellent introduction to climbing techniques, rope handling, rappelling, and belaying. Our training ground will be Smith Rock State Park, the premiere climbing area in the Northwest. Fee includes transportation, climbing equipment, group camping equipment and instruction.

 

Rock Climbing II

A quick review of climbing basics will be followed by topics such as: rock anchor construction, anchor cleaning, safe top rope setup, rappelling techniques and sport lead climbing. Prerequisite: Rock Climbing I or Program Coordinator approval. Fee includes: transportation, climbing equipment, group camping equipment and instruction.

Rock Climbing Day Trip

This is an excellent introduction to the fundamentals of rock climbing as well a great chance for veteran climbers to meet new climbers. Fee covers transportation, climbing equipment, and instruction.

Self Rescue

This course will offer participants the skills needed to rescue a second climber on a multi-pitch ascent. Prerequisite: The Efficient Climbers Toolbox or Program Coordinator approval. Four classroom/gym sessions.

Women’s Rock Climbing Weekend

A rock climbing weekend designed by women, for women, and taught by women climbers. Learn the basics of rope handling and climbing technique at Smith Rock State Park. Fee includes transportation, ropes, harness, climbing equipment, and instruction.

KAYAKING

Inflatable Kayaking

Join the excitement of inflatable kayaking on the North Santiam or McKenzie Rivers. This outing for all skill levels focuses on boating equipment, river reading, and river safety. Fee includes rafting equipment, wet-suit & booties, transportation, and instruction.

Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking

Learn the basics of whitewater kayaking in a controlled environment, including the Eskimo roll and basic maneuvering techniques. Fee includes kayak equipment, wet suit & booties, transportation, paddle jacket, pool rental, and instruction. Four pool sessions & two river trips.

 

The Complete Whitewater Kayaker

Take two concurrent sessions of Intro to Whitewater Kayaking for a discounted price. Eight pool sessions and four river trips. This time in your boat will allow you to go from beginner to comfort on the river.

Roll Sessions

These sessions offer you the ability to practice and refine your kayak roll in Stevens Natatorium, inside Dixon.

 

Skill Builder

An intermediate level trip to work on your kayak skills. Topics include: river running /reading skills, surfing/play boating, bracing/rolling. Fee includes all kayak equipment, wet suit & booties, transportation, paddle jacket, and instruction.

Whitewater Sampler

This three-hour sampler is a great way to explore kayaking before committing to a longer class. Pool session includes: boats and basic skills. If you like it, fees can be credited to a longer class. Fee includes: equipment and instruction.

MISCELANEOUS

"Cooking it Up” Dutch Oven Style

Cinnamon rolls, cookies, pizza, jambalaya...and more! Bring more pizzazz to your next camping trip by learning to cook with a Dutch oven. The group will prepare, cook and enjoy three dishes each session. Fee covers equipment, food/ingredients and instruction.

Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer Course

This course is designed to help you better understand and teach LNT skills and ethics. It is a two-day training that starts in the classroom and then heads outdoors where the group will do a short hike and camp overnight.

Mom’s Yoga and Hot Springs Day Hike

Join us for a hike up Tid-Bits Mountain followed by a yoga session, and then a nice soak in Belknap Hot Springs. Fee includes transportation, hiking guides, and hot springs admission. Special trip offered for Mom’s weekend. Oregon Scrambles and Hikes – Su, F, W, Sp Join us for a day of exploring, scrambling and hiking in Various Oregon locations! We’ll enjoy amazing views, waterfalls, and exhilarating hikes. Bring your camera for this one. Fee covers transportation and guide.

MOUNTAINEERING

Crevasse Rescue Refresher

This four-hour course covers self and team rescue techniques. Topics include: ascending/descending a rope, hauling systems, and crevasse rescue principles. Prerequisite: Mountaineering I or consent of Program Coordinator.

Mountaineering I

This outing is an introduction to the fundamentals of glacial snow and ice of the Northwest. This is a skills course, not a summit attempt! Fee includes ropes, helmet, boots, ice axe, crampons, transportation, camping gear, and instruction.

Mountaineering II

Topics: belaying, rappelling, and self/team crevasse rescue techniques. This is a skills course, not a summit attempt. Fee includes ropes, helmet, boots, ice axe, crampons, rescue accessory cord, transportation, camping gear, and instruction. Prerequisite: Mountaineering I or Program Coordinator approval.

RAFTING

Rafting Trips

Join us for white water rafting on the North Santiam or McKenzie Rivers. All skill levels focus on boating equipment, river reading, and safety. Fee includes rafting equipment, wet-suit & booties, transportation, guide and instruction. (Special trip for Dad’s weekend.)

SKIING

Introduction to Telemark Skiing

Telemark skiing involves negotiating downhill turns on Nordic skis - both challenging and fun! You should already be comfortable on cross-country skis before this one-day outing. Fee covers instruction, transportation and Telemark Ski Rental. Bring winter clothing, lunch, and perseverance!

Introduction to XC Skiing

Your classroom will be in the snow where you’ll receive instruction on Nordic skiing techniques. Emphasis will be on track and touring techniques, selection and use of clothing, and winter safety tips. Fee covers transportation, instruction and ski rental.

Ski & Snowboard Wax and Tune Clinic

Learn how to clean, prep, wax and tune your boards yourself for less than the cost of having someone else do it. Tools and supplies are provided!

SNOWSHOEING

Cascades Day Trip

This outing offers the basics of snow travel using snowshoes. Learn how to become more mobile on snow and discover why snowshoeing has become so popular with winter enthusiasts of all ages. Fee includes transportation, snowshoe rental, and guide.

Full Moon Trip

We’ll let the full moon light the way for this evening snowshoe tour in the Cascades. We’ll bring headlamps as a backup. Fee includes transportation, snowshoe rental, and guide.

Hot Springs Trip

Enjoy a walk in the winter wilderness of Oregon! Topics include general winter safety tips and clothing selection. Top off the day with a soak in Belknap Hot Springs. Fee includes transportation, hot springs admission, snowshoe rental and instruction.

SURFING

Introduction to Surfing

This class covers surfing rules/etiquette, wave types, equipment, and board. Both days start with instruction on the beach then move to the water. The course is taught near Otter Rock. Fee includes all equipment (surfing and camping), transportation, and instruction.

OUTDOOR SAFETY RESCUE

Whitewater Rescue Clinic

This clinic teaches recognition and avoidance of common river hazards, self-rescue techniques, and rescue techniques for paddlers in distress. Scenarios provide opportunities for individual and team/group skills practice. Come prepared to paddle and swim in class II whitewater!

Wilderness First Aid

This two-day course taught by Wilderness Medicine Institute (WMI) covers the basics of outdoor emergency care, and emphasizes extended care situations. It is ideal for trip leaders, summer camp employees, and anyone who spends time outdoors. Use this course to recertify if you’re currently certified.

Wilderness First Responder

This 80-hour certification course emphasizes prevention and decision-making. The Patient Assessment System trains students to evaluate backcountry patients and take appropriate action in emergencies. Practical simulations and labs provide practice in backcountry leadership and rescue skills.
