Frequently Asked Questions for Students

  1. What is PROMISE?

    PROMISE (Professional, Managerial Internships in State Employment) is an internship program designed to provide professional, managerial, or technical paid work experience in state agencies. The purpose of the program is to increase the potential pool of applicant's currently under-represented in state and local government agencies. Students of color are encouraged to apply.

  2. Is this program only available to students of color?

    No.

  3. What are the eligibility requirements for participation in PROMISE?

    OSU students (currently enrolled this term) who have completed the equivalent of their sophomore year of undergraduate studies with a current accumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to apply.

  4. How long does the summer internship last?

    The internship lasts for 10 weeks during the summer.

  5. Are interns paid for their 10 weeks of work?

    Yes, interns are paid $4,000 gross salary for participating in the PROMISE internship program. Interns receive their salary through the OSU payroll system. Payroll signup is coordinated by the OSU Office of Human Resources.

  6. Where can I obtain a PROMISE sponsorship application?

    Internship applications are available at the following OSU locations:

  7. How are interns selected?

    Sponsoring supervisors submit sponsorship applications to the PROMISE Program Administrator for review and acceptance based on the strengths of the experience and training the project will provide the intern. Following the review and acceptance process, PROMISE intern applicants are referred to sponsors for interviewing and selection based on a match of qualifications and interest.

  8. Is there a deadline date for submitting my internship application?

    Yes, the deadline date for submitting your internship application can be found on the application form.

  9. How long does it take to place an intern in departments/units once all the applications have been submitted?

    Within three to five weeks following the application deadline date, internship applicants will be referred to sponsoring supervisors for interviews.

  10. What are the criteria for referral and placement of interns?

    Every effort is made to refer internship applicants to sponsors based on a match of interest and qualifications.

  11. What types of projects do PROMISE interns work on?

    Sponsoring university departments and agency units must create projects that provide interns with professional, managerial or technical level work experiences.

  12. What other types of activities are interns involved in during the 10-week internship?

    Interns and their sponsoring supervisors participate in weekly luncheon forums and network groups, various workshops and field trips. The internship period concludes with a poster galleria, a visual presentation of each intern's accomplishments, and a recognition luncheon for interns, sponsoring supervisors, and special guests.

  13. Are these activities required?

    These activities are required for interns. Supervisors are encouraged to attend all of the PROMISE events to support the professional development experience of their intern.

  14. Is there any special training provided to PROMISE interns?

    Yes, interns are required to attend an orientation/training session on the OSU campus. This session is scheduled during the first week of the 10-week internship period. It provides valuable information about the program and sets the expectations for interns and supervisors. The PROMISE Program Administrator in the Office of Human Resources is available to assist interns throughout the internship period.

  15. Do I have to pay my own costs for transportation to and from events during the internship period?

    Sponsoring supervisors are to treat PROMISE interns as they would other OSU or agency employees. If interns drive their own personal vehicle, the supervisor must reimburse them for their mileage expenses, just as they would any other employee. If the department/unit provides a state vehicle, the intern and the supervisor must follow all of the same procedures that would occur for a regular employee, i.e. pre-registration, etc.

  16. Who provides transportation for field trips?

    The Office of Human Resources will provide transportation for OSU supervisors and OSU interns for events off campus. Off-campus supervisors and interns are responsible for their transportation to the event. The PROMISE Program Administrator can assist in connecting off-campus participants for possible carpool opportunities.

  17. Can I work on a project that will provide me with some experience in my area of discipline?

    Every effort is made to refer intern applicants to sponsors based on a match of interest and qualifications.

  18. Can I request to complete my internship in a location other than Corvallis?

    Yes. Intern applicants are asked to specify their location of choice on the application form.

  19. Are interns eligible for health benefits?

    No.

  20. Who do I contact if I have questions or issues during the 10-week internship period?

    The PROMISE Program Administrator in the Office of Human Resources is available to assist interns throughout the internship period.
