Pride Center Advisory Board

Pride Center Advisory Board Guidelines
(Created October 2003)

Membership:
The Pride Center Advisory Board members serve as advisors to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Questioning, and Intersex community and to act as a resource to the Pride Center staff on the history of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Questioning, and Intersex community at Oregon State University.

The Pride Center Advisory Board members must be dedicated individuals who are committed to the affirmation of LGBTQQI identified students at Oregon State University and upholding of the Mission Statement of the Pride Center.

The Pride Center Advisory Board meets on a regular basis and is in constant communication with Pride Center staff to address issues affecting the Queer community at Oregon State. Pride Center Advisory Board members provide expertise, advice and support to the Pride Center Coordinators on how to deal with community issues.

Pride Center Advisory Board Members provide information to other communities, groups and organizations about Pride Center events and activities.

Composition:
The Pride Center Advisory Board is comprised of fifteen (15) members in addition to the Coordinators:

Up to 5 OSU Staff or Faculty Representatives: Must be faculty/staff of the current academic year
2 Community at Large Representative Could include former staff, faculty and/or students
up to 4Student Organization Representatives Must be representative of an LGBT group associated with OSU
4Student at Large Representatives Must be a currently enrolled OSU student, at least one must be a graduate student

The Pride Center Coordinators shall serve as the co-chairpersons of the Advisory Board and facilitate the monthly meetings.

The Diversity Development Coordinator (supervisor of all the Cultural Center staffs) shall serve as an ex-officio (non-voting) member of the Advisory Board.

Advisory Board Selection:
  1. Selection Timeline
    Advisory Board members are selected during May of every academic year, or as needed.
  2. Selection Process:
    Faculty, Staff and Community Representatives:
    A member of the current Advisory Board must nominate candidates for the Advisory Board membership. The current Advisory Board will vote on all nominations and all approved nominees will be asked to join the Board by the Pride Center Coordinators.

    Student and Student Organization Representatives:
    A member of the current Advisory Board must nominate student and student organization candidates for Advisory Board membership. The current Advisory Board will vote on all nominations and all approved nominees will be asked to join by the Pride Center Coordinators.
  3. Reappointment:
    Current members of the Pride Center Advisory Board may nominate an outgoing member/organization to continue for another term. The current Advisory Board will vote on all nominations and all approved nominees will be asked to continue by the Pride Center Coordinators.
  4. Length of terms:
    Faculty, Staff and Community Representatives:
    Advisory Board membership is for two academic years (on a staggering basis). After length of service, all members are considered to be ex-officio (non-voting) members and are encouraged to remain active on the Advisory Board.

    Student and Student Organization Representatives:
    Advisory Board membership is for one academic year. After length of service, all members are considered to be ex-officio (non-voting) members and are encouraged to remain active on the Advisory Board.


Advisory Board Members Responsibilities:
  1. Attendance at monthly meetings to be held during the academic year (October – June).

    Agenda of June meeting to include meeting the new Pride Center staff, welcome new members to the Board, and learn about the Cultural Center mission statement, goals and objectives.

    The Pride Center Coordinators will send out meeting minutes within one (1) week of the previous Advisory Board meeting so that members not in attendance will be able to provide input to issues addressed at the meeting in a timely manner.
  2. Members of the Advisory Board are expected to coordinate and serve on at least one subcommittee during each year. Committees include Lavender Graduation, Facilities, Budget & Support, and others as necessary.
  3. Representatives of the Advisory Board will serve on the Selection Committee for the Pride Center External and Internal Coordinator selection every Winter Term.
  4. Advisory Board members are encouraged to participate in Pride Center activities and events. This includes workshops and meetings.
