Summer Programs: High School (9-12)
OSU Chamber Music Workshop: July 2013
Ages:9-19
The Oregon State University Chamber Music Workshop will welcome advanced and intermediate string students ages 9 to 19 to the campuses of Oregon State University and Ashbrook Independent School in July 2013 (Session I July 8 – 13; Session II July 15 – 20). Workshop participants will benefit from coaching, sight-reading, supervised practice, master classes and opportunities to perform with ensembles in informal concerts. Participants will also have the chance to explore Oregon State University through a range of on-campus activities. In addition to Artistic Director Jessica Lambert, instructor of violin at OSU and concertmaster with the Corvallis-OSU Symphony, distinguished faculty will include members of the renowned FearNoMusic ensemble from the Oregon Symphony. Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE)
The Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) Program matches bright, motivated high school students with professional scientists and engineers for eight-week, full-time summer internships. Students assist mentors with research and other activities, learning first-hand about science and engineering careers in the process. Interns attend two full-day conferences during the summer, gaining additional exposure to diverse careers in scientific and engineering fields, and developing skills that will serve them well in technical careers. ASE is part of Saturday Academy, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Summer Experience in Science and Engineering for Youth (SESEY)
Grades: 9-11
A program primarily for high school girls and ethnic minorities traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering. Students are paired with a faculty mentor in engineering to conduct a mini-research project.

STEM Academy
Grades: 2-12
A nonprofit community-based program, offering enrichment educational opportunities, especially in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields to elementary, middle, and high school students. Camps and classes are taught by experts in the community and at OSU and are held primarily on the OSU campus. STEM Academy is open to all motivated students. Scholarships are available to all who qualify. STEM Academy programs include a variety of week-long summer camps (Engineering, TekPets, Computer Science, Forensic Science, Ocean Science, Lego Robotics, Science & Art, etc.), the Advocates for Women in Science, Engineering, and Math (AWSEM) program, and the Apprenticeships in Science and Engineering (ASE) program.

JumpstART: Precollege Visual & Performing Arts Program
Grades: 9-12
JumpstArt emphasizes skill development and conceptual growth through exposure to accelerated art, music and theater instruction with visiting artists and faculty mentors. Students work in art, design, music, and theater labs, attend evening presentations by guest lecturers and artists, and participate in multi-disciplined events.

KidSpirit Youth Programs
Grades: K-12
KidSpirit, which is sponsored by the College of Health and Human Sciences, offers year-round programs for children ages 2 years through high school. School year programs include recreational gymnastics and Girls on the Run, a curriculum based running program for girls grades 3-8. During the summer, KidSpirit offers a Summer Day Camp which has programs designed for grades K-12. Specialty programs in the summer include SKIES (Spirited Kids in Engineering and Sciences), Chefs in Motion, Pottery, First Aid and CPR training, and Rock Climbing. KidSpirit also offers parties year round, options include gym games, gymnastics, archery, swimming, or your own customized birthday blast!

Newspaper Institute for High School Students
Grades: 9-12
Co-hosted by OSU and the Oregonian and funded by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, this camp seeks to nurture budding journalists underrepresented in the field. Participants will create a print and online newspaper from start to finish working with professionals in the field. They will learn the value of making a difference by covering multiple perspectives in the news.

4-H International Summer Camp
Grades: 3-12
The main goal of the Camp is to establish a bridge between the Latino community and OSU; to expose young people to healthy, educational, and fun environments where they have the opportunity to explore different career opportunities at OSU; and to learn about the different programs for academic support, financial aid, and admissions for minorities. All activities have been designed to help the participants develop leadership skills, new abilities, and become successful adults in the future.

4-H Summer Conference at OSU
Grades: 7-12
Program goals are teaching leadership and public relations skills as well as gaining subject matter knowledge in various disciplines. Participants become acquainted with Oregon State University through on-campus tours and involvement in educational activities.

Oregon Sea Grant Programs at Hatfield Marine Science Center
Ages: 7-17
Oregon Sea Grant camps give young people an opportunity to interact with researchers and learn about the marine environment through hands-on programs and field trips. Topics covered in each camp differ, but range from marine technology to marine mammals. These camps also provide an opportunity for youth to participate in activities outside the scope of normal school classes, touring research vessels, building their own Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and tagging fish with researchers.

College Credit for High School Students
Grades: 9-12
High school students can start their college career early while helping meet high school graduation requirements. This program allows high schools students the opportunity to earn transferable college credits, start a college transcript, and complete these courses in the comfort of their own environment. These online courses, taken through OSU Extended Campus, are offered in almost every subject area.

Young Entrepreneur’s Business Week (YEBW)

Students reside in Weatherford Hall and experience the value of business skills for any occupation. Participants are placed in mock companies and are given the opportunity to lead their peers as the CEO, crunch numbers as part of the finance team, or develop a marketing plan to skyrocket their sales. They learn business and investing strategies, develop leadership skills, and are inspired to network and prepare for their future.

GEAR UP Summer Programs
Grades: 7-12
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federal program that promotes college readiness for low-income students in rural locations. OSU partners with the Sweet Home GEAR UP cluster to provide annual summer camps that integrate science and engineering project-based activities, reinforce college planning curriculum and provide an inspiring on-campus experience to students.
