Extension Metro Office programs

The purpose of the Extension Portland metro area office is to actively seek community organizations as partners to support the engagement of citizens with the University to address individual and community problems through research and teaching, and to apply the University's resources for the public good. Some of the current partners include the Oregon Food Bank, Portland State University's College of Urban Affairs, the Food Policy Council, Metro Council, the Multnomah County Commission on Children, Families, and Communities, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland area schools, numerous state departments, etc. Some of the programs include:

  • What metro residents want from Extension. A series of 5 breakfast meetings was held to learn about specific issues and needs of Portland metropolitan residents. Web site
  • Partnership for Clean Air and Health. This project is in partnership with the Department of Environmental Health and is intended to reduce diesel particulate matter in ambient air. Partnership for Clean Air and Health Web site
  • Childhood Hunger in Oregon: Educating and Engaging the Medical Community. Educating and Engaging the Medical Community. Helps medical professionals address the critical problem of childhood hunger, including identification of families at risk, hunger prevention, and treatment.   • Farm Bill Forum. In January 2007, Portland State University, OSU Extension, and Congressman Earl Blumenauer co-sponsored a discussion about the federal Farm Bill to allow urban residents the opportunity to provide input to this important legislation.
  • Urban Rural Interdependence Symposium. This symposium is under development by OSU Extension, PSU, U of O, EOU, and the Governor's Office on Rural Policy, and is anticipated in 2008. It will allow participants to actively engage in research and discussions which focus on "one Oregon."

Aquatic Health

The OSU Extension Sea Grant agent based in the Portland metropolitan area delivers education and outreach programs focused on aquatic ecosystem health. This topic covers issues such as habitat protection, water pollution, salmon and watershed restoration, oil spills and invasive non-native plants and animals. Aquatic Health Web site

Master Gardener Program

The Master Gardener (MG) program is for people who want to learn more about horticulture and agree to volunteer time to extend gardening information to others. Master Gardeners receive over 60 hours of horticultural training and serve as volunteer staff members of OSU Extension. Washington County Master Gardeners are part of the greater Portland Metro program, which also includes Clackamas County and regional programming in Multnomah County. Oregon Forestry Education Program

Oregon Forestry Education is an outreach program of OSU's College of Forestry. OFEP's mission is to educate Oregonians about forests and forest resources and to prepare them to make informed decisions and take constructive action concerning the future of Oregon's forests. The basic OFEP workshop--Project Learning Tree--is a national natural resources curriculum that explores the role of trees and forests in our lives. Workshops are held throughout Oregon, including Portland and Oregon City. A new partnership with OMSI provides a unique opportunity to bring forestry programs into the classrooms. OFEP Web site

Nutrition Education Programs

Oregon Family Nutrition Program

The Oregon Family Nutrition Program provides food stamp eligible families with the information they need to make healthy food choices and choose active lifestyles. Participants learn practical skills in dietary variety, food safety, food security, and food budgeting. Oregon Family Nutrition Program Web site

Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program is designed to assist limited resource audiences in gaining new knowledge and skills in food preparation, food storage, and food safety. Watershed Stewards Program

Master Watershed Stewards go through an extensive education program and then serve their communities by completing a project with assistance from OSU Extension, resource agencies or watershed councils, and becoming points of contact for their communities. Watershed Stewards Program Web site

Christmas Trees and Forestry

Many educational programs are available for the forest land owner and Christmas tree producer. Programs focus on educating non-industrial private forest owners, students and teachers; Christmas tree managers and workers; professional foresters; and the public on issues relating to the wise use and management of forest and tree resources.
