The New Student Programs & Family Outreach office helps new students make a smooth transition to OSU. We are dedicated to the success of your student! SOAR programs include:
The Office of Dean of Students promotes the development of a healthy campus community and serves as a primary link for students, faculty, administrators, and parents. If you have a concern about your son or daughter and are not sure where to go for help, this is a good place to start.
Your student will likely go through a whole range of emotions as he or she adjusts to the changes that college life brings. Here's a month-by-month description of what your student may experience.
Corvallis is considered one of the safest university communities on the West Coast, and OSU has the lowest reported crime rate among PAC-10 campuses. The Department of Public Safety and the Oregon State Police work in partnership to provide a safe campus for students. In addition to a wide range of safety services and crime prevention programs, officers patrol the campus and residential areas on bicycles, on foot, and in cruisers 24 hours a day.
Student Health Services provides medical and wellness services for routine and emergency care, including an on-campus pharmacy. Counseling and psychological services are also available. The Health & Fitness Connection is a clinic located inside Dixon Recreation Center that offers athletic training, fitness consultation, massage, physical therapy, and health promotion/wellness resources.
The newly renovated, state-of-the-art Dixon Recreation Center provides facilities for and information about fitness, indoor climbing, outdoor recreation, sport clubs, intramural clubs, challenge courses, safety training, and more.
Oregon State University understands that students have many facets to their lives, including personal, professional and academic demands. The LifeBalanceOSU website offers information and resources to assist them in balancing the daily demands and opportunities of life.
Your student can choose from 13 coed halls with theme areas such as students-in-engineering, First-Year Experience, Honors College, entrepreneurship, international, wellness/substance-free, community service, and single gender. Cooperative houses are another on-campus option. OSU offers a flexible meal-plan program that allows students to eat at any of the main dining halls. Vegetarian options are available at all locations. For more information, visit University Housing & Dining Services.
Freshmen can also opt to join one of OSU's sororities or fraternities. The Greek houses are all located within a 10-minute walk of campus.
Some students choose to live off-campus, beginning in their first year. Apartments and houses close to campus are plentiful, and listings can be found in the Corvallis Gazette-Times.

At OSU, there are 11 sororities, all alcohol-free, and 22 fraternities, including some that are alcohol-free. Becoming a member of an OSU sorority or fraternity can be an important part of your student's college experience. Scholarship, service, and leadership are central to the mission of Greek life here. The Office of Greek Life serves as a liaison between the Greek chapters, the university, and the Corvallis community. The office provides resources and support for a wide range of activities including event planning, fundraising, community service, crisis management, academic development, and scholarships.
The LGBT Services Office supports Oregon State University in meeting the specific academic, social, and cultural needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, and Allied students, prospective and current. Retention of LGBTQQIA students is the primary goal of the LGBT Services Office. Promoting campus based groups who educate and raise awareness about sexual and affectional orientation and identities is an essential component of the program. Equally important is the goal of fostering relationships within Corvallis and across surrounding communities to help build relationships through which LGBTQQIA students can thrive as they pursue future educational, career, and life goals.
The LGBT Services Office works to empower all students by fostering opportunities to think critically, receive information, share knowledge and to sustain an educational environment in which each student has the support needed to shape unique identities. Growth is a natural progression of curricular and co-curricular experiences and the LGBT Services Office assists students with such growth processes through mentoring, advising, interaction and commitment.
