After retiring a dozen years ago from the science powerhouse known as the University of California at Berkeley, entomologist George Poinar -- "tired of the Bay Area and its traffic" -- moved with his wife and fellow researcher, Roberta, to more tranquil Corvallis. Discoveries on a grand scale aren't novel to the 70-year-old Spokane native, an emeritus professor of entomology at UC Berkeley and a courtesy professor at Oregon State University.
Students who take advantage of the Degree Partnership Program between Linn-Benton Community College and Oregon State University can benefit both academically and socially, a six-month doctoral thesis project has found. They also may save thousands of dollars in tuition over four years. The program works well whether the student is fresh out of high school or coming to college at a later stage of life, according to Jackie Balzer, dean of student life at Oregon State University.
A team of Oregon State University researchers will leave this week for Antarctica to explore the hydrothermal vents inside Deception Island in Antarctica and recover a network of hydrophones deployed in the area last year.
Paul Komar, professor emeritus in oceanic and atmospheric sciences, will present the John Byrne Lecture, "Living on the Oregon Coast in a Century of Climate Change" at 7:30 tonight at LaSells Stewart Center.
Tim Holt of the OSU forest science department will make a presentation on "Games Get Serious: Computer Games for Visualization and More.” The presentation at 3 p.m. today in 313 Richardson Hall is the keynote address for GIS Day on Thursday, Nov. 16.
University Housing and Dining Services will hold a grand opening for Raintree Coffee Co. at McNary Central from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. People who come to the grand opening can learn how shade grown and organic coffee farms protect rainforests.
A discussion of diversity in international experiences (12-1:30 p.m., 448 Snell Hall), an International Degree poster session (11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., MU student lounge across from the convenience store) and an international career panel (5-7 p.m., MU 211) are highlights of today's International Education Week activities. The Jacob Ervin Band, a newly formed musical group of four OSU students and one from the Central Linn High School, will have its debut campus performance today at the Midday Music Interlude at noon in the MU Lounge.

Bill Robbins, emeritus Distinguished Professor of History, will present a talk on "A Century of Forestry: Policy and Politics in the Pacific Northwest" at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at LaSells Stewart Center. The presentation is part of the College of Forestry's Starker Lecture Series.
University Theatre's first play of the 2006-07 season, "The King of the United States," by Jean-Claude van Itallie, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 16-18 at the Withycombe Hall Main Theatre. The Nov. 17 performance includes sign-language interpretation. Tickets can be reserved by calling 737-2784. Cost is $9 for general audience, $7 for seniors and $5 for students.
Dennis Osmond, who has long been active in studies of the epidemiology of HIV/AIDS, will present a talk, "Bean Counting in the AIDS Epidemic: Why It Matters and Why It Isn't so Easy to Do." The talk is at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in the LaRaza Room, MU 208.
GIS Day, an opportunity for schoolchildren and the community to learn about computerized mapping with geographic information systems (GIS), is Thursday, Nov. 16, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Events will include live computer demos, poster galleries, and open houses in LaSells, Richardson and Wilkinson, and the City of Corvallis Mobile Mapping Truck parked in the MU Quad.
Crossroads International is hosting its monthly Worldview series Thursday, Nov. 16, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with "A Taste of the World," at the Corvallis Multicultural Literacy Center (128 S.W. Ninth St.). OSU students from 10 countries will offer international beverages, snacks and a bit about their culture. This event is free for members of Crossroads and interested visitors. The November issue of Perspectives is available online, and includes an update on the status of the PERS Individual Account Program (IAP) remediation. PERS is reporting that they will be sending corrected IAP annual statements for 2004 and 2005 to members’ home address by the end of November. These statements will show contributions and earnings through Dec.31, 2005. Earnings on the IAP are now structured to be credited annually instead of monthly. The earnings crediting for 2004 was 12.77% and 12.80% for 2005. There is additional information available on the PERS website regarding the IAP 2004/2005 annual statements, Revisions to the Individual Account Program (IAP), IAP Annual Statement FAQs, and a sample statement with pop-up boxes that explain the data fields on the statement.
Environmental Health and Safety has scheduled a driver safety course, Roadcraft Advanced Driver Program, on Tuesday, Nov. 28. The class will run from 8 a.m. to noon in MU 213. This course is recommended for those who drive state vehicles, but is suitable for all drivers.
