Decades ago, the maker of M&M's took its red candies off the market after the dye was linked to cancer. But red M&M's have been back for some time and scientists are now saying that some food dyes, including Blue No. 2 and Red No. 40, used by candy makers (including M&M), may actually fight cancer, OregonLive.com is reporting. Scientists from OSU looked at dyes because they are chemically similar to compounds that bind to cancer-causing chemicals, according to the report.
Word this week that another round of job cuts -- as many as 400, some say -- may be in the offing at Hewlett-Packard Co.'s campus in Corvallis has revived questions about the company's future in the Northwest. HP invented its inkjet technology in Corvallis and made its first DeskJet printer in Vancouver, creating a hugely profitable division that kept the company afloat during years when other parts of the business were near failure. …Last month, HP donated a 20-year lease in one of its Corvallis buildings to OSU, which will use it to house private and public research into nanotechnology, the study of matter on atomic or molecular scale that has the potential for broad application in electronics, medicine and other fields.
Barack Obama has seemed embattled for a month or more, forced to explain his comments about small-town Americans who "cling" to guns or religion and to distance himself from inflammatory comments by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. Hillary Rodham Clinton seized on Obama's opposition to a temporary moratorium on the federal gas tax as proof he doesn't understand or stand with working America, painting him as an elitist. "This might be seen, when we look back, as a critical moment at which Obama was very badly damaged," says Bill Lunch, a political scientist at OSU. (Obama campaigns Friday and Saturday in Oregon, which holds its primary May 20.)
