Engineering challenge features national award winners
(Las Cruces Sun-News)

At the Institute for Energy and the Environment in New Mexico State University's College of Engineering’s 18th Environmental Design Contest in early April, OSU won first place for the combination of Tasks 2 and 4: Photovoltaic System Performance Indicator and Sampling Strategy for Spinach. In addition, their team's faculty adviser, wearing his signature bow tie, accepted the inaugural Life-Long Achievement Award surrounded by half of his 20-member team in bow ties as well, an obvious show of reverence. Goran Jovanovic, associate professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, attended his 16th and final year in the competition, having brought more than 100 students to NMSU, providing each of them an educational experience not achieved through general coursework.

Boys, girls share living space on campus
(Boston Globe)

In the Woodstock era, the advent of coed dorms caused a stir, with Life magazine proclaiming the development "an intimate revolution on campus." Coed floors came along over the next two decades, giving college students immediate proximity to each other. The next step, coed suites and bathrooms, brought the sexes even closer together. At the urging of student activists, more than 30 campuses across the country have adopted what colleges call gender-neutral rooming assignments, almost half of them within the past two years. The University of Pennsylvania, Skidmore, and Ithaca colleges, and Oregon State University also allow roommates of different genders. Students at New York, Harvard, and Stanford universities, among many others, are calling for gender-blind dormitory rooms.

Dick Fluter Named to OGCSA Hall of Fame
(Cybergolf National)

The Oregon Chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (OGCSA) has recognized Richard A. Fluter as the 2008 recipient of its Hall of Fame Award. The award was presented May 4th at the Oregon Superintendents Annual Meeting at Salishan Resort and Spa in Gleneden Beach. Dick began his working life at the age of 12 at Glendoveer Golf Course in Portland, working for his dad Edward Fluter, a previous Hall of Fame Award recipient. At Glendoveer Dick learned a deep appreciation for the game, hard work, and the value of serving others. He went on to become the first undergraduate in Turf Management at Oregon State University in 1966, and then began a career that has spanned 40 years.
